I should first say that I am not a hiphop/rap fan. I have heard bunch of artists and groups from the underground. There is a variety of topics and experimentation in their lyrics and musical art. Even the underground has a share of okay lyricists, but I do appreciate when they mention the facts of why mainstream only accepts looks over real talent.

Mainstream is absent of substance. It is the same topics over and over again: sex, cars, money, bling, bragging about what they have, dancing. The lyrics are just similies to each other making me think there are very few ghostwriters and writers.

Most underground rap is better than mainstream rap. You'd think that if rappers were getting all of this money, they would hopefully be better than they were in the underground. But in many cases, they become worse.

By the way, Runaway Statue is pretty good. Great stuff.... Very Happy

When these underground hiphop/rap artists become mainstream they seem to forget what they did before to appeal to the masses it is either themselves and/or the record deal's direction for them.

The name of genre for the fake hiphop/rap artists and groups should be:
American Waste/Pop (pop by the audio, too).
They are other names for it.
I just mentioned one that came to me.

These artists that are underground some have potential 2 cross over 2 the mainstream so when they are broke and in the hood they had love in the hood (50 cent, Nas,lost boys, fabolous, etc.)but about after they get that money they forget about all the people that helped them or looked out 4 them when they are down and they get comfortable and slack off on there music.

Yeah, thats true in most cases. But some mainstream rappers try to stay "true" by doing mixtapes. A lot of rappers forget where they came from and what they had to do to get where they are currently at, which is sad.

That should be the way.
Mainstream albums, but the ones with the potential
should make "Mixtapes" but also stuff that they did before without any mainstream sound in it. That's where they get their own share of money.

Imagine
Eminem making more mainstream, but he would want to go back to his roots at the same time. It will still be sold by millions, because he has huge. His first official album, Infinite, had actual talent, but he ignored it after because of lyrics that mentioned it would never do mainstream. He did, but he should still perform his real stuff compared to the fake crap.
You can even replace Eminem's name with other underground to mainstream artists - Common, Killa Cam (Cameron), Murda Mase (Mase), Fat Joe (now is Fat Joke), and others (probably more coming from the underground in the future).

I hate rap music right now! I like Lupe, but other then that it's the pits. It's funny that I listen to old school rap or people I know shit more then anything else. I walk around with a case of CDs of my friends shit. Like my man Shabaam Sahdeeq or Access Immortal. I be downloading shit, but never listening to new stuff.

here is the problem..everyone is quick to say this or that rapper changed..when they went mainstream..and everyons says they wouldnt do it..which is bull sh!t..when you get to the major things are different you have to sell records to break even ..and to do they you have to go commerical..so yes some artist change to be able go platinum and not be in the hold to the record companies..not ever record deal is a good one..

most underground stay underground for the love of the music and for what they doing..some get offers..that want then to give up publishing or change their image to something their not..so they stay underground makin $8 a cd vice $3..still doin it big..just dont have the Distribution like the majors..

think about it..
