Well....when I say genius...relative to maybe a flock of particularly dim sheep...anyway - on with the plan - How about getting points for UBW chart placing. Biggest points for whole chart, lesspoints for genre charts. get them for various goals too - like a record/publishing deal bonus scheme. chart in top 20-get something, top ten-something more, at number one - get so and so, stay there for a certain period-get bonus etc etc...
Just a thought! Let the games commence! Wink

I gotta disagree on this one. It's hard enough to have legitimacy in the charts - wouldn't want to create new incentives to juice the charts. The charts have finally started gettnig some decent turnover with new artists turning up - with natural lifecycles for songs.

Gotta go with Smili on this one ( Shocked ) lol....

I get where you're heading Soulfish, though. But unless we could guarantee nobody would fix it to gain masses of prestige, then it'll be back to square one..No Competition...just a lot of fixing.

Do I recall something in the distant past on another thread about the realities of the music industry?!? Wink

Just messin with ya - But I know we got to number 2 with no fixing and my opinion is that any project (ie UBW) that has in mind some sort of growth should give itself somewhere to grow into-not just adapt constantly. In this case, an unsigned chart that demands attention from music lovers regardless of their knowlege of the net or music industry. A chart that is credible and accurate of what is actually going on,and one that requires no big distribution or advertising budget to climb (just good music). Where word of mouth and people's actual opinions make the chart. As such there are a couple of angles, one of which is the chart needs to hold some kind of mirror up to the real world to seem "real" while somehow negating all the bad shit that screws the real world up. Still with me?!?!? (Rent-a-rant.co.uk.......) The points are the UBW's current way of giving respect or power to members, as such it's the natural reward/motivation system. I agree that a rigged chart would make it seem lop sided (by the way, notice the crews which have a number of songs floating around the same amount of plays on all their tracks?......seems a bit wierd that some one would religiously play all the songs in such perfect synchronicity so regularly!!) But I'm thinking of UBW with such massive play numbers that a couple of mates logging 30 plays a week won't even make a dent. Also I'm assuming the play count per user will be limited eventually. (At the moment I believe it's two). So who ever is helping the bands is a real fan - same sort that will buy a CD regardless of review or quality. Again an acurate reflection of reality. I'm boring myself now.....any way - any more opinions or perhaps alternatives?!?

Soulfish...

Thanks so much for the thoughtful suggestions!!! You certainly put some time into thinking this through, and I appreciate your perspective.

I think this would work well if we could limit plays to 'logged in' members only, so that there would be "NO" possible way to beat the system. That is a step I'm cautious of, because then it looks like you're not getting as many plays as you actually are. The other option is to have TWO charts. One for all plays and one for member only plays. (I've got something like this in mind for the 'rating' system already). The only problem here is with 2 different logs, it will be tough to lay everything out in such a way that it's simple to understand.

I need to mull this over some more....

Thanks again!

just make ''guest'' plays worth a certain (lesser) value in the contest (to avoid juicing) and find a way to track ''self'' plays so they dont count at all. that way only legit plays count most toward the points bonus Smile

Ok, Soulfish had me thinking all day yesterday about his suggestion, now I have a headache.......

We have to systems to log into don't we? Page manager and forum.

When we upload songs, if there was a box to allow us to check the upload but not have it register on the charts would be one step.
Also not to have it register on the charts if the artists (through cookie recognition) click on the song while signed in in the forum.

This is totally banning the artists, save for the initial check on upload, from sending their song upwards.

Or, allow the artists to play the song, but not have the play register on the chart. I think that was MP3.com's ploy to stop chart fixing.

I know this is relying on people having cookies enabled, but it should lessen the impact someone on their own can make on the chart.

Peeps like Soulfish, Dj, Maisie, myself even (lol) have hit top spot by NOT playing our tunes ourselves, so it can be done (especially if I made top spot!!) by any artists.

One thing I'd say is that being forced to become a member of something before you get involved puts alot of people off. 1 of the main reasons I got into UBW in the first place was that I had a choice and didn't feel coralled (is that how you spell it? Like when you control a horse or cattle cowboy style!) and if the chart is to be potentially all it could it need to be open and accessable to the most suspicious of minds. Sorry, I know this doesn't help but thought it was important! Keep up the fantastic excellent and truly worthwhile work of keepin us unsigned musician in the game! Wink
