There's a deal going and for $1500 I could get a nice new PC. with 40gb 256 mb etc etc.

Since my 17 gb 128mb is nearly full and can't listen in hifi, would this upgrade enable me to do so.

Or is it the dialup modem the problem?
Just wondering, cheers Smile

Hi ImL,

Concerning the Hi Fi stream it just depends on your connexion (dial up , cable or dsl)
But ya can't stream on 128 kbps if ya have a 56 k dial up modem lol!
For a good hi fi stream ya may have a 256 or 512 connection ( or more)

concerning the Cpu : don't buy anything under P4, 3Ghz, 68/80 Go, 512 Mo ( 1024 is really better)...this kind of cpu cost around 800 Euros ( in france)...and add a good sound card...

Peace

Alek

Your internet speed (and enjoyment in my opinion) comes totally from your connection speed. You don't need a lot of computer to browse the net, but you DO need a fast connection. The computer would help with everything else, like MAKING music!!!!

go and mo are french for gb and mb, lol... just kidding... or am I ????

I'd look at it this way.
If you're PC is slow and you want faster processor (ie. you can't run programmes you want to run, it glitches or crashes alot etc..) - go for the deal.
If it's just a memory problem - buy a $100 firewire hard disk which will be HUGE and save yourself $1400.
If the speed you work at off line is fast enough for you, then upgrade your internet connection to ADSL and it should free your current PC up to work at the speeds you want on-line.
Either way, if your internet connection is slow, buying the fastes PC in the world won't make any difference at all, and most musicians have to store in removable hard drives because the files for music (or graphics) are so large they add up real quick!
Hope that helps. Wink
Alternatively just buy it because it's new, it's shiny, and it's yours!!!!

IML, the broadband connection is the bottleneck for streaming hifi, not the cpu. upgrading your ram on your current PC to 256meg might help with overall responsiveness on your current PC (most OS will run alot better on 256meg RAM) but it won't help you stream hifi at all. Save your $ for the cost of the broadband connection. The PC I have cost $250 new last summer, so don't break the bank there.

Also, check around alot on PCs if you're going to buy a new one. that sounds like alot of $ for a PC. You can get a pretty mean machine -not top of the line, but top of the line 12 months ago - in the $500-$700 range now. Just to give an example of some prices check out a site like
http://www.pcsupplysource.com/
The site doesn't look to be up today, but check it at a later date to give yourself an idea of what you can get for much less $. I list them as an example because they're a highly rated vendor:

Cpu perfomances helps a lot for mastering and live acts...or when ya want to use several soft at the same time......and yes! for removable hard drive....or external...got 1 x 80 internal HD & 2 x 120 Go externals ( O: Octets....same than bits but not bytes = 1 byrte = 8 Octets...or something like that).....cuz files are so larges and....for back ups to prevent any hard disk crash....

peace

Thankyou everyone for your thoughts and ideas.

My cpu runs sweet and don't have any crashing, loading or speed probs. I gather from all your comments, I just need to get Broadband and save $1500. Which is a relief.

Although, we did give our daughter 'The Sims' for Christmas and we are near 75% full Laughing but all is well.

Thanks everyone [/img]
