It happens everywhere in the world...but I never want to read a UBWer is involved. Below is what happened when a simple reversing manoeuvre went wrong. Not far from where I used to live.....This is just one of five serious accidents in the past two days.
Witnesses described how an automatic Hyundai Lantra, driven by an 89-year-old man, zig-zagged across Poulton Street, Fleetwood, mounting the pavement in the process and bringing chaos to the town's busiest junction.
"An officer who was there said that it was like the road to Basra," said Insp Graham Smith. "But the good side was that no-one was badly injured."
The mayhem began when the Hyundai was reversed into a stationary Ford Escort, badly damaging the bumper.
It then moved forward and in a 50-yard rampage:
* Mounted the pavement
* Flattened a pole carrying a parking notice
* Struck a Daewoo sending it spinning into the road
* Crushed the grille of a BMW 3 Series
* Shot across the road to sideswipe a Securicor van
* Smashed into the back of a Rover at the junction with Lord Street
Vehicles hit when other cars were shunted into them were a Nissan Almera and a VW Beetle.
The driver, Arthur O'Malley of Elsinor Close, Fleetwood, and two other people were taken to Blackpool Victoria Hospital but were discharged last night.
Insp Smith said the damage had been caused by a series of forward and reversing manoeuvres.
He said "The driver has hit a car behind, put his car in drive and panicked."
He said the driver would be interviewed in the next few days.
Jonathan Owen of Grasmere Road, Blackpool, watched helplessly from the other side of the road as his BMW was caught up in the incident.
"I saw it happen. He hit the first car and hit the post and then bumped a car into the middle of the road. I thought 'He's going to stop in a minute.' then I thought 'He's going to hit my car.'
"It's a miracle he hasn't ploughed into someone and killed them."
The woman whose Hyundai was left in the centre of the roadway said: "We were just walking up and down and I said to my husband, 'Look there's car like ours in the middle of the road.'"
Watching was Stephen Turner of Esk Avenue, Fleetwood.
He said: "It was amazing. I heard a bang and then he came on the pavement hit the pole and spun the Daewoo into the middle of the road and then hit the BMW."
The incident had been sparked when the driver of the Hyundai tried to park.
"I saw him reversing in," said a bystander. "someone was waving him in and I thought you could park a bus in that space. But he hit a car and then I think his accelerator must have jammed or something."
The first car hit belonged to Mrs Elizabeth Tomlinson of Knaresborough Close, Carleton, who had left work to do some quick shopping.
"I was in the shop and heard the noise but at first didn't realise it was my car involved."
The road was blocked for more than an hour as police took statements, paramedics cared for the injured and breakdown vehicle hauled away cars that couldn't be driven.
Take care on the roads guys and gals....please. |

Woah that's just plain crazy. I hope his insurance is paid up.
Just out of curiosity, how many points did that net? |
