Of the Ghotti/Soulfish tunes I've heard my 3 favorites are
Fallen
Control
Sunflowers
"Filed away" is not the same calibur of song, nor is "Mercury Rising" . I like "I don't Mind" pretty well and it has alot of interesting pionts, but the 3 above are probably the 3 I'd consider as a showcase of the band.
Fallen is probably my favorite of the 3, but my question would be which tune is the most representative of the band? Also, which sound is most 'marketable" and earcatching to a label? If I was putting these 3 songs on a CD to send I'd probably order them
1) Sunflowers 2) Fallen 3) Control just because I'd want to slam the listener a little more right out of the gate. Bon Jovi releases You Give Love a Bad Name and Livin on a Prayer before they release Wanted Dead or Alive - in my view the best song on that album. Band's generally don't lead with a more laid back tune.
BUT - If I had to pick 1 tune though I'd probably go with "Fallen" or "Control" though.
"Fallen." the musicianship is "different" and so much more "artistic" than most rock music today. That's the tune that initially got me interested enough to hear the rest of your songs. The vocals on all of your tunes are not "standard" high power rock vocals, and that'll likely be something to overcome from a marketing standpoint, but the overall song presentation stands so clearly above the vast majority of what is out there. Fallen to me is a highlight.
Control. Has a more polished sound than Fallen. Vocals probably fit more with what is "expected". The musicianship and songwriting shines through very well on this one, and although I like the artistry of "Fallen" more, this song might sound more commercial to a label - and that might be the consideration that's the deal clincher.
So how's that for an answer? Really - I love the band's stuff. I don't think you can go wrong with "Control" if you have to go with 1 tune, but there are something about "Fallen" that I like even more, but it might not be as commercial???

That's some good advice bro - will be heeded. Many many thanks for taking the time - respect! |

Thanks for listening....as to production - there isn't any. Just us playing live, then re-doing guitar, bass and vocal over first drum track as seperates (all done in one take per instrument so the vibe stays in) and then basic mix down - we record at a friends place who let's us use down time (811 Studio's in Cowfold, East Sussex, UK) so tends to be 5 songs in two days job - with vocals and mix done in last 2 hours flat on average. Looking forward to getting some £££££'s so we can really mess around tracking up instruments, percussion, vocals/Backing and then seeing what madness we can muster in production!!!!! Put it this way - the drummer loves Panthera, Suicidal, Infectious Grooves, Bass payer is jazz eddie cochran to P-Funk, Guitarist is Vai, Metallica, Dylan and a bunch of underground surreal shit I don't know about and I'm just up for a real tune that means something to the person that wrote it. Mmmmmmmmm Production is going to be fun!!! |

I think the overall groove is what I like best about the sound. Don't kill the natural sound and groove you guys have by trying to make it _too_ polished. Sometimes having only a couple days to record it can be a good thing. Technology nowadays will let you perfect the life out of a tune. If I remember correctly Van Halen I was recorded on a shoestring and over a weekend or two - mostly in single live passes. It's still many people's favorite recording of the band.

you're right - tough trick to pull off. What was the Van Halen album where you hear the drummer in the the background saying "Click Track???!!!! We don't need no stinking click track!!!" before ripping into the most awesome riff ever? |

Control seems to be a commercial hit even though I think it remains true to the bands independent style and sound. All great tracks, seems only a matter of time. |

Hey - we made the top ten Rock chart (under catagory "rock"!! Cheers to everyone listening. Wow, things can only get better. Welcome to 2005.
Now if we can just get a record deal, sign onto a big global tour as support, find a producer who'll help us get our live sound on tape and buy my mum and dad a house!
And I'm now a "rookie" it seems. It's like makin it into high school or something! Hope everyone had a good one last night. Think I did.
Big love to the UBW for 2005 |

As ya asked, here 's my first review in french for ya

If I understand correctly (anyone out there fancy doing a translation - Free Bananas to closest one as judged by Alek!) my goat is hairy, my mother is too, I look like a monkey and should live in a zoo.....right?!
P.S.Re.The reverb on the guitar - he's using a Line 6 multi tap - and the cool thing is he's doing it LIVE!! He also uses it to sample himself on stage and then play over the top. Should come to a gig sometime! (ie. Brighton - Polar Bar, Queen Street, Feb 2nd or London, West Kensington, WestOneFour (the old Orange) Valentine Day (Feb 14th) |

Hey, just wanted to say you should have had an option for great/excellent on your poll, although I understand why modesty would prevent it.
Your band is way better than just good, in my opinion.
Good luck with sending your demo off |
