Lowell Pelkey
Lowell Pelkey Bio:

I'm a guitarist and sometimes vocalist, formerly of Seattle's infidel, a rock band that achieved some local following but no deals. These days I write & record on my own and I'm open to new gigs. If you like what you hear get ahold of me and we'll set something up- I know a lot of musicians with talent and gear.

My music these days spans styles from riff-heavy hard rock to melodic instrumentals, often with an emphasis on uncommon time signatures. I'm aiming for music that's accessible to listeners without being too common. That said, a straight up rocker is as good as anything. I don't know what you'd call my music so I put myself in the general Rock category and let it speak for itself. I'm not too into labels; someone said it best when they said, "The cool thing about being a rock band is you can be anything you want."

I've got a lot more music posted on soundclick.com- you can search for "Lowell Pelkey" there or click this: http://www.soundclick.com/bands/5/lowellpelkeymusic.htm.

This was my first experiment to create something entirely out of loops and I think it turned out pretty well. There's a lot of stuff goin' on but the overall thing congealed into a musical statement- I'm basically satisfied with it. It's another one of those things that I've been making lately- something finished enough to make the statement but not so polished it's set in concrete. It's a perfect example of what I'd bring into a band situation for further development.

I was drivin' around in downtown Seattle and took a wrong turn out of a parking lot and looky there- my headlights light up the train tracks way down in the underbelly under 4th Ave- oops- can't go THAT way ;) But what's that? Someone's hangin' out down there. I took a minute to check him out. Older guy, bad clothes, real dirty. He looked pretty lit up. I could see him fine, but I'm bettin' all he could see was my headlights- he prob'ly thought I was a cop. I only checked him out for a minute before turnin' my rig around, but he made an impression on me...I kept wonderin' what it must be like to be a 50ish alcoholic sleepin' on the abandoned train tracks under 4th Avenue with the rats. A lot of those homeless guys are just waste cases, but some of them have serious mental problems, especially schizophrenia. I projected a little of both on this guy, and this is my story for him.
This song's a perfect example of a subtle time change being crucial to the riff. I can't imagine playing this tune in straight 4/4 time- the main hook would be gone, it would throw off the whole feel.

The vocal on this recording double-tracked, and the 2 tracks are literally the first and second times I ever sang this tune- period. I wrote all the lyrics out and finished them just before we went in and recorded it. This tune is also one of the few recordings Chris Hao appears on, part of a 4 song demo Infidel recorded at Frank Corbino's 16x studio in Mountlake Terrace, WA. Chris just walked up, plugged in, laid down his rhythm track, and threw down a solo (the 2nd half of the solo section) in one take each. He's the kinda guitarist that'll make ya wanna go home and practice!

This song is called "Distractions" because I kept getting interrupted while I was recording it. There's nothing worse than pushing record AGAIN and hitting the tune just right AGAIN and havin' to stop for something- and start over!

I'm not sure this is really a rock song- but rock songs can be anything, so....whatever. It's something I recovered from an analog master to keep it from fading into total obscurity. About 8 million years ago after finishing a recording with my band infidel I tapped a mic on a desk and ran it through a delay to get a beat- super high tech, I know- then plugged my guitar in direct and laid this lil' thing down (too many @#$()!! times in a row thanks to all the interruptions). I finally managed to finish it as one complete take without punch-ins (which was the whole point in the first place, to make it live). I ran the finished track through the same delay....it doesn't get alot more basic than this.

There's a dry version of this song on soundclick.com- another musicians' site where I've got like 20+ songs posted. Check 'em out here: http://www.soundclick.com/bands/5/lowellpelkeymusic.htm if you want. Always love to hear an opinion, good or bad- constructive is good if it's not too big a stretch- PEACE OUT and thanks for the listen.

No story- just guitar. free form jam over pretty changes. i see...January 1st, any year, about 2:40am, when the party's pretty much died down, and you've smoked so many cigarettes you're not enjoying the one you're smoking right now, and you haven't quite finished your last glass of champagne.
