Hey Guys,

My name is Jake. I'm not a musician, but I love music, and I have friends that are in bands. But I am a damn good programmer, and I'll take what god gives me Smile Anyway because I love listening to music so much (and perhaps I have a bit of band envy), I've been working on a website for backyard bands for about a year now (between work and school).

You can see the progress at the website, but what I'd really love is to hear your ideas. What you see on the website is a very core framework necessary for any band promotion tool. But that's boring. I want bizarre and cool. Stuff like collaborative editing on garage band files maybe? Can I get a show of hands? Or how about live chatting with the band through the website (the band would get the chats via AIM). Is this annoying or cool? I need the feedbacks so I can know what to program!!! Please give me any ideas on what tools you need as a band so that I can make this a cool place to go.

This is after all, for you.

Thanks
-Jake

Oh as a note: The website isn't released officially yet, so what you see there is really a pre-beta version. What that means is: expect there to be some bugs and non-working pages, and PLEEEEASE don't use internet explorer, all web developers really hate that piece, please consider using firefox or safari. Any bugs, comments, questions, etc are appreciated and you can post here or email me directly: jakechapa AT gmail DOT com

Hey dude.
Looks like a really good idea.

I tried to search for any bands in Sydney, Australia, but the pop-up map didn't really do anything other than show me a Google Map of Sydney,
and the band 'Trans Siberian Orchestra', which is most definitely not based in Sydney. Smile

I think the streaming player could have a few more options too. I like to be able to skip forward and backward within a song sometimes when I am reviewing it (after already listening to it as a whole first of course). But I guess the site won't be primarily used for song reviews, and the player is possibly a plug-in you are using, and may not have those options.

The design of the site looks very good.
Considering it's still a pre-beta version, I'd say it's coming along very nicely.
Any idea when the go-live date might be?

I also really like the idea of the online collaborative Garage Band file editing. Not sure how you would do it though.
Maybe using a Trak system (I used one at uni when doing major group projects to save multiple versions of files every time one is uploaded to avoid someone overwriting someone else's work if editing the same file at the same time. As a programmer, you have probably used this kind of system already)
Problem with this might be that I think Garage band files are very big, definitely in comparison to source code files, so this would require a large amount of storage space on the server.

I'm just thinking out loud though...

I'm not really sold on the band chat function. It could be really cool, and I would definitely use it ... but who's going to want to chat with me? Very Happy

Another idea could be to have site members set up mailing list options, so that every week they can get an email listing all the bands playing in their area that Friday or Saturday or the whole week even, tailored to their tastes and genres. I am already listed with one called Liveguide, which shows me a list of all the Rock and Metal acts on in Sydney every Friday and Saturday, sent to me the previous day.
Just a thought.

I also saw the non active link at the top for buying and selling equipment.
There are already heaps of auction sites in the net, so it'd probably be a rarely-used part of the site, in my opinion.

Again, I'm just thinking out loud, but I hope it helps with some ideas.
Nice work with the site so far - I hope you get it finished and best of luck!

hey man,

Thanks for this, the mailing list idea is great. I'll definitely be adding that. Not sure when the live date will be, but It can handle real bands now, so if anyone has aband they'd like to add, please do so.

Thanks!
