In 2008, given the increasing presence of digital music, the large-scale democratization of means of production and the
emergence of a zillion networks inspired by MYSPACE, with all the opportunities for dissemination and promotion this
offers, musical and sound creation are seeing a boundless expansion. It goes into all directions and one can lose himself
amidst all of it, for good or bad.
On one hand, there is a profusion of new artists and new musical propositions and, on the other hand, there is this
handful of creators who use a profusion of sounds drawn from an infinite number of sources which can sometimes be
surprising; this is equally interesting, if not more in certain cases!
BIOBAZAR, a Quebec project that is still unfortunately rather unknown, could be likened to the latter category. Before
even checking out the track record of the one and only instigator of the project, Dany Janvier, one can guess, upon
listening to only a few tracks off STE-CÉCILE, that our guy has been absorbing, for many years, various manifestations of
psychedelic music – be it the first incarnations of it in a more sixties-rock approach, from the US West Coast, its
teutonized and electronified German version of the seventies, its almost 100% version as heralded by ambient-house
luminaries towards the end of the eighties, or even its more dancefloor-oriented bursting, as psychedelism was
transmuting, around 1991 or 1992, into ‘’trance’’ and ‘’trance-psy’’ techno – but also the essentials in dub, funk and
electro, as well as prog-rock….
One can easily imagine that the man behind these sonic spires has been honing his style for a long time. And indeed! One
can only notice the evolution of Dany Janvier’s sound since the release, in 1998, of the famous Wireless Telegraph And
Signal Company of his Tektonik Veda project. With that production, the multidisciplinary artist, who is also into video as
well as a member of musical ensembles such as LE BAND ZEN and JESUS BENCH 400 LIVRES, already laid the basis of his sonic
singularity: diversity of influences, nurtured layering and an obvious evolutionary side…and one can only celebrate the
level of mastery and accessibility BIOBAZAR has achieved today, after a certain number of years, while retaining all the
integrity of the beginnings.
Besides the happy shambles made of influences and styles which his music offers, Dany Janvier also integrates, into
BIOBAZAR ‘s concoctions, world-beat instrumentations as well as samples that are often humoristic taken from the Quebecer
filmographic repertoire. This said, these samples always integrate well into the proposed soundtrack, they are never
unduly invasive. They never totally divert our attention from the worlds which animate and agitate themselves all around
and morph constantly during the course of a same track; for example, the opening track starts with a semi-down-tempo,
semi-electro(clash)/electro(old-school) feel, then psychedelic and even country-folk sonorities come in alternately and
briefly, and then the tempo accelerates and the soundscape transforms into a technoïd music with an emotionality that
recalls a PLAID on a great day…a bit later, the album brings us on a dub excursion that is hallucinated albeit trippy and
rather dark …then, the rhythmic portion intensifies and brings us back to the funkiest moments of big beat and psytrance,
always with the psychoactive touch that is the BIOBAZAR trademark.- this aspect stands as a constant element in the
record; the ambiences are always textured, evolutive, psychotropic and with a lot of richness, never linear.
BIOBAZAR also comes back to more dub-oriented mixtures for a while, with even a slight atmospheric rock-influenced touch.
In track 9, he flirts with a jazzy idm sound that is totally unbridled…by the way, this track marks the beginning of the
most psychedelic segment of the album. A most delightful way to land, in an elegant fashion, after the flight…at this
moment the tempo is around 100 bpm maximum – this is rhythmic but cerebral stuff. It should also be noted that the album
is made in an uninterrupted sequence and that the tracks seamlessly blend one into each other (Dany Janvier’s experience
as a radio programmer as well as a dj probably has something to do with this). To be recommended wholeheartedly to fans of
electronic psy music (uptempo or downtempo), or simply to people looking for intricate and adventurous electronica!

En 2008, compte tenu de la présence de plus en plus accentuée de la musique numérique, d’une démocratisation à vaste
échelle des moyens de production et de l’émergence de mille et un réseaux inspirés de MYSPACE, avec toutes les
possibilités de diffusion et de promotion que cela offre, la création musicale et sonore connaît une expansion sans
bornes. Ça part dans toutes les directions et on y finit par s’y perdre, pour le bonheur des uns et le malheur des autres.
Il y a, d’une part, cette surabondance de nouveaux artistes et de nouvelles propositions musicales et, d’autre part, cette
petite poignée de créateurs qui utilisent dans leur musique une surabondance de sons provenant d’un nombre infini de
sources qui sont par ailleurs parfois surprenantes, ce qui peut-être tout aussi intéressant sinon plus dans certains cas!
BIOBAZAR, projet québécois encore trop peu connu, pourrait appartenir à cette dernière catégorie. Avant même de prendre
connaissance de la feuille de route du seul et principal instigateur du projet, Dany Janvier, on devine, à l’écoute de
quelques pièces seulement du disque STE-CÉCILE, que notre lascar a absorbé pendant de nombreuses années plusieurs
déclinaisons ou manifestations de la musique psychédélique – qu’il s’agisse des premières velléités plus rock sixties de
la Côte Ouest américaine, de son versant allemand teutonisé et électronifié des années 70, de sa version presque 100 %
électronique telle que représentée par les grands excentriques de l’ambient-house de la fin des années 80, ou encore de
son éclatement plus dancefloor, alors que le psychédélisme se transmutait vers 1991 ou 1992 en techno dite ‘’trance’’ et
‘’trance-psy’’ – mais aussi les essentiels de la dub, de la funk et de l’électro, en passant par la prog-rock….
On imagine aisément aussi que l’homme derrière ces volutes sonores peaufine depuis longtemps son style. Et en effet! On ne
peut que constater l’évolution du son du Trifluvien Dany Janvier depuis la parution, en 1998, du fameux Wireless Telegraph
And Signal Company de son projet Tektonik Veda. Avec cette production, l’artiste multidisciplinaire également versé dans
la vidéo et membre d’ensembles musicaux tels que LE BAND ZEN et JESUS BENCH 400 LIVRES posait déjà les assises de sa
singularité sonore : diversité d’influences, stratification nourrie et côté évolutionnaire marqué…et on ne peut que saluer
le degré de maîtrise et d’accessibilité auquel est arrivé aujourd’hui BIOBAZAR après nombre d’années en gardant toute son
intégrité des premières heures.
Outre le joyeux foutoir d’influences et de styles qu’offre sa musique, Dany Janvier intègre également aux concoctions de
BIOBAZAR des instrumentations world-beat et des échantillons souvent humoristiques tirés, entre autres, du répertoire
filmographique québécois. Cela dit, ces échantillons s’intègrent toujours bien à la trame proposée, ils ne sont jamais
indûment invasifs. Ils ne détournent pas totalement notre attention des mondes qui s’animent et s’agitent tout autour et
se transforment constamment au fil d’une même pièce; à titre d’exemple, la piste d’ouverture démarre sur une note
semi-down-tempo, semi-électro(clash)/électro(old-school), des sonorités psychédéliques et même country-folk se manifestent
tour à tour et brièvement, puis ensuite le tempo s’accélère et le paysage se transforme en musique technoïde d’une
émotionnalité qui n’est pas sans rappeler un PLAID des beaux jours…un peu plus loin, l’album nous emmène dans une
excursion dub hallucinée quoique trippy et passablement sombre…ensuite, la portion rythmique s’intensifie et nous ramène
aux beaux moments les plus funky du big beat et de la psytrance, toujours avec la touche psychoactive propre à BIOBAZAR.-
cet aspect s’affirme comme une constante dans le disque; les ambiances sont toujours texturées, évolutives, psychotropes
et d’une grande richesse, jamais linéaires.
BIOBAZAR revient ensuite à des amalgames plus dub pour un temps, avec même une petite touche d’inspiration rock
atmosphérique. À la pièce 9, il flirte avec une idm jazzée des plus éclatées…cette plage signale d’ailleurs le début du
segment le plus psychédélique du disque. Quoi de mieux pour finaliser l’envolée d’élégante façon... le tempo avoisine à ce
moment les 100 bpm tout au plus – rythmique mais cérébral. Il est à noter que l’album défile en mode de séquence
ininterrompue et que les pièces s’imbriquent admirablement bien les unes aux autres (l’expérience radiophonique et de dj
de Dany Janvier n’y est probablement pas étrangère). À recommander sans réserves aux amateurs de psy électronique (tant
uptempo que downtempo), ou tout simplement, et surtout, aux fervents d’une électronica touffue et aventureuse! |

CHRIST!!!!! thanks for the book on the origins of BIOBAZAR, but unfortunately, it's posted in the completely incorrect forum. if you're asking for a review, do so in plain words, please, and also much fewer. also, this isn't a canadian site, so no need to give english and french equal page time; although, i'm sure PPB appreciates it. (here's a shout out to you PPB  )
this post belongs in the 'advertisements & off-site promotions' forum, regardless of how talented and prolific your man Dany happens to be, and from your write-up, he sounds like a god. but even gods have to follow the rules here. thanks for your attention to this matter and please feel free to post here if you're actually looking explicitly for a 'song review' as the forum title ever so plainly suggests. thanks for your time and effort, and thanks for your interest in UBW. we'd love to have such an iconic figure as Dany Janvier as part of out Unsigned Band Web family. best of luck and Godspeed. |
