hey people.

new solo artist page is up. i call it 'Lazy Eye' because i couldn't htink of anything better to call it. it's possible that it will change a few times before it's all said an done. i mainly put up the page to have a place to put up solo material i'm working on. i've been working a lot with Reason lately, and i've put up my first tune late last night. it's not finished yet, but getting close. still need to add some stuff and tweak the mix. i also haven't taken any steps to master this except for using the tools within Reason.

this first one is classical-ish. very repetitive, and i can't play the keyboard, so it's also sloppy in spots. not really sure how i feel about it at the end of the day, but it's not offensive to the ears, at least. please have a listen and let me know what you think. Thanks!

thanks gunner. what i used for the bit of mastering was the 'master class mastering' device in reason. it got a maximizer, eq, compression, and some sort of stereo thing, i think. i just kept going through presets until i found something i liked. other than that, i just spent a lot of time tweaking the mix, making sure the various sounds weren't fighting over frequencies, panning a bit, all that stuff. added some different reverbs as well for more control. glad you enjoyed it! well, if it helps, do what i did, don't try. Laughing or rather, be ignorant as hell about mastering. if it sounds like it's come from a studio it's because of one or two things: 1) total beginner's luck, or 2) Reason's mastering components are kick-ass and you should buy Reason. of course Reason has serious limitations like not being able to record audio directly. Smile glad you like the sound of the mix. that was what i was most concerned about since the song itself is made up of interchangeable loops and so on.

also, i've found that when you're working with midi and/or ready-made samples/loops, the sound quality is always better. the signal strength is always weaker if i've recorded the loop here at home.

Ok...thanks for the tip......I also use drum loops......but they are dry mixed.......also, I use Soundforge and Wavlab to master....but still sounds funny to me....it could be my headphones.....could be my crappy speakers......maybe I'll start there.....but ive heard some say not to use headphones when mixing and mastering and ive heard some say its ok.....who knows....i'll keep pluggin away......but man, youve definetly nailed it!!!
have a good one!!

yeah, i think it's ok to use headphones, but not JUST headphones. i used both, because i wanted to make sure it sounded good on both. you can pick up a decent set of powered reference speakers for less that $200. the ones i have can be purchased from sweetwater for $150. m-audio studiophile speakers, 20 watts per channel. they sound great compared to the desktop speakers i used to use. they weren't cheap either and came with a sub woofer. makes a lot of difference, though.

well, thanks for the compliments! Mr. Green makes me feel like all the time i spent on it was worth it.

I just think its a nice song tate... I dont Know diddly squat about mastering anything (except 'masters of the universe') (of course).. but it all sounds good to me (through headphones... thats all ive got at the mo Sad ) i love the tune though man, you just cheered a sad guy right up... i think your getting to grips with this stuff pretty cool... your high pitched 'bells' 'xylophone' or sound that i cant nail (about 2.30 min in)....Laughing sounds cool man.... was that on keyboard??? that really technically stuck out for me... its a nice rythmic piece without drums involved aswell man.... sorry im just almost short handing right now while i listen to it again (around 4th time...lol..prob 6th by the end of post... Laughing ) guess its taking me a few to analyse!! Laughing plus also ive risked a few beers... Laughing

i like what youve done with the bass work....

im shooting now.... chow Smile

thanks ppb. it was something to work through while trying to figure out software. i'm happy it's turned out as it has. Very Happy i've never written anything remotely like it.

yeah, it would be nice for an old school cartoon, or something christmasy, i think. i haven't really figured out the whole minor thing on the keyboard yet, even though i know i can just hit white keys and play Am. so i think that's why the major. i usually like to switch back and forth.

thanks again! Cool

gorgatron, nice tune. I honestly enjoyed it. you've got a nice environment going on behind everything too... You can kindof picture a kid riding a bike in an idealistic world riding down a street smiling and waving at everybody sitting on their front porches... Very Happy

thanks smili! glad you enjoyed it. that's funny that you got the mental image you got from it. it'll probably earn that image, too, once i'm done with it. i don't know why exactly, but baroque music sounds a lot like country to me. call me crazy. Laughing

thanks again!

Baroque = Country?

I'll remain stumped - scratching my head as I compare the Achy Breaky and the Brandenburg Concerto #3 Very Happy
