I'm seriously thinking of becoming a "Lofi-only" artist on UBW, as I've got a lot of tracks that need uploading, and hopefully I'll get more plays Also, it seems to make sense to offer lofi versions as just a "taster" of my music, and then send high quality tracks out on CD. However, I seem to get an equal number of hifi and lofi plays, so I might be risking losing half my plays if I go "lofi".
I've noticed that quite a lot of artists on UBW are "lofi-only" - and have got loads of tracks up. Do people put lofi ones on UBW and then host hifi versions on other sites, or send out CDs with high quality tracks? Does it necessarily mean more plays if you're lofi only? |

Hi misrust,
I think you should stick with both options. Some stations are hifi only and in my case, the only reason I listen to lofi only, is I can't play hifi. There must also be people who won't listen to lofi if they have hifi capabilities.
Although you have a good point about offering a 'taster', cos your music is awesome, maybe disable the download in hifi option. That way people can listen only.

i think you may need to give the listeners right of choice. i try to upload both hi-fi and lo-fi whenever it's possible. |

lol! this is the most discussed thing on OMD actually....Internet is the best exposure ever created and at last kill possibilities to make some money...( or something like that...)
i listen both lo and hi fi tracks....but lo fi quality sucks....
ya can disable the download feature or select just the lo fi dl option....
some of my tracks are not available for dl and the others are only lo fi dl....
but with less than 300 dl i don't think that i've lost a lot of money lol!!!
peace

I'd agree with Alek with enabling both lo-fi and hi-fi streams but disabling hi-fi downloads. seems like the best choice. I enable hi-fi downloads though. Mainly considering that I'm not making any money with my music anyway so what's the point? |

I agree with having BOTH available, and cutting off Hi-Fi downloads if you would like to protect your ability to sell.
I personally only listen to hi-fi because of the sound quality. If I was on a modem, I would only listen to lo-fi. Having BOTH will open up your music to more visitors.

Sounds like I should stick with both Hifi and lofi - I wonder why most OMDs don't offer both options? Ron - you could make a fortune if you're the only one doing that. Everyone....start spreading the word!
Anyway, back to the point. I guess it makes sense to offer both. There must be a lot of casual listeners who are still on dial-up so I guess they'll only listen to lofi, but there seems to be more broadband users everyday who'll listen to hifi. I'm planning to put together a CD of some of my tracks and use my UBW tracks as am incentive for people to order the disc, so disabling download for the older tracks might be the right thing to do. "Never Alone" has been on here for quite a while, so that may be the first to go "stream-only". |
