"Why do people come on here and advertise their music and it's always on myspace? why no use myspace AND UBW?"
I hear you on that. I can understand that people want to maximize their exposure, but they are missing the point if they don't make sure to highlight the material here first and mention Myspace as an afterthought. You can upload more music here for free in the first place. You should also always refer people from your Myspace profile to your UBW profile. It maximizes the amount of material you can expose people to.
Another site where we have music posted has a filter set up to where you can't link to Myspace. You can't even write the word without a filter changing it to "The Evil Murdoch Empire." I didn't know that was their policy because they don't post it, but imagine my surprise and embarrassment when I saw the links in my post and my signature. It wasn't cool not to post the policy, but you might want to consider something long those lines. It was at mp3unsigned.com. The site admins were tired of this exact same thing. They were tired of all the bands directing trafic away from their site to Myspace, but bands weren't directing their fans back to the other site. More people that use Myspace would be aware of the smaller sites with quality music not always found on Myspace if they would direct their people to these smaller sites. Plus, it's just a nice thing to do since all of you put time into maintaining the site and it's a good thing to do because it helps promote the music of the musicians on this site. I've noticed that everyone is out for themselves on here. There only seems to be a small community of people on here that contribute to the forum other than to promote their own music. Everyone wants reviews but aren't willing to write one. It's a great reflection of what I've found in local music scenes over the last several years. Bands aren't working together to build a scene or community; bands are more holding out hope that they will be lucky enough to catch a break with a bigger band and get swept up. The more communal mentality of a scene, physical or virtual, the more successful it will be. People don't seem to really grasp this anymore. Put your music everywhere and point people to everyplace they can find your music. It's not like you've got great chances of getting found on Myspace. Hell, we get over 2 times the attention at this site than we do at the other. Besides, hardly anyone will be reached here by going to the forum and asking them to go to Myspace. You've got to have a platform here from which to direct traffic. This person didn't even leave a link to their profile on UBW. I'm not going to send a friend request to someone I haven't heard because they're begging for support. We all want everyone to support us. i guess they haven't learned as much about the music biz as they claim. |

Why don't you look all of us and add us? It would be really, really great if you would support us. On here and on Myspace. We also love having support from everyone. I read you profile and know you're like 15 or something, so let me put it like this: you're here to gain our interest. You need to get involved and let us know you're listening to what we're doing. This isn't like regular Myspace friend collection. That big number of total friends doesn't mean crap if they aren't listening. Look up bands on here and send them a request. Let them know you've listened to them. People would probably review your song here at UBW if you had posted a link to your UBW profile. I've even listened to the song. I know that listeners here at UBW would like it. You've got to use every tool possible and direct people to as many places they can listen to your music or read about you as possible. That will make more sense to you when you have more than the four songs that you are allowed to load on Myspace. Is UBW not good enough for you to upload your song here? If it's on here, direct people there first. That's where you tell them how to find you on Myspace and where you beg for support. You should also find a way to word it so that it doesn't sound desperate. You're still way young and have plenty of time before you truly reach that point. |

Go to mp3unsigned.com to check out the site. There's a lot of activity on the boards. I actually learned about it through someone on Funender.com. Get on the forum and create a signature with a Myspace link. After posting something, check out your signature.
I threw a fit when I first saw it. I posted a pretty angry message on the board after that. i took a lot of flak but was able to talk to the moderator about it. I think the filter is actually a good idea, but it's got to be clearly posted. Their argument for not posting the policy is that nobody reads them anyhow. I do, so I would have avoided it. At least if it's posted and someone throws a fit you can say, "It's posted in the forum rules." I'm not completely anti-Myspace, but I'm pretty big on supporting other sites that are strictly dedicated to music, especially unsigned music. For example, I avoid PureVolume like the plague. You just end up competing with major label acts. At least with Myspace you can more easily work to develop a virtual fan base. Anyhow, the filter is an interesting feature and gets people to promote their music on smaller sites. On the other hand, I can also understand that you don't want to limit a user's freedom to promote their music where they want. It's kind of a difficult issue and hard to know where to draw the line. The site admin at mp3unsigned.com just coldly states that he hates Myspace and was tired of people only directing traffic towards Myspace instead of his site or other small market sites. I bet a lot of people on here would support it if you took a similar approach. |

I've got to ask! An amazing producer/rapper/musician friend of mine is pretty reluctant to promote himself in any way. As a friend I know that it is something that needs to be done to see him successful. What would you guys who are oh so knowing suggest I do to get a buzz going for him but at the same time not diminish the integrity of his work and character? Thanks. |
