I haven't uploaded a tune in a long time, but I found this tune on an old 4-track cassette tape. I recorded it around 1990 when I was in a Joe Satriani phase. I apologize for the pathetic drum machine, but this rock instrumental is probably trhe most fun I had writing and working on - way back when...

Nice!!! Very Satriani-esque... The solo's are really cool. Maybe I should go back and dig through my old 4-track tapes.... |

Those were the good old days... I mean I was broke and living with my parents, but I also had time to play and be creative. Now I'm just an old fart who goes to work and pays bill and stuff.
I really would love it if Satriani would somehow hear this tune and like it enough to record it though. It's completely inspired by his stuff - especially the Surfing with the Alien album. |

Did you remaster this????
if not....man that old 4 track sounds good......
I used to have a cassette player with 2 decks...and i would record a guitar rythym and then play that back and record a solo on the orher deck and back and forth until i put so much crap on there that the tape started to wear out...lol
the quality dimenshed because i had to keep adding everything...im glad those days are gone....geeez!!...lol
but this tune sounds really good....you should redo it digitally now! |

gunner, yeah, I copied the 4 tracks into my Paris DAW and put some compression over the final mix to pull levels up just a bit.
I know what you mean by bouncing stuff all over the place. I did something similar before I got a 4-track using headphones as microphones. I tore the headphones apart and used the ear pieces as mics, laid my amp on it's back and put the ear pieces on top of the amp. I ran the earphones into the line-in on my dual cassette deck and played over top as it was bouncing tracks between decks. But like you say it got ugly quick, and you had no control over the mix or anything... not really very fun after a song or two, but enough to get me saving my lawn mowing money up for a real 4-track.
on the tune, Track 4 on the cassette had the drums, bass, and a guitar on it. I probably bounced tracks 1,2,3 onto track 4 without playing anyting live during the bounce.
All the other tracks had alot of different stuff, some harmony parts and doubled parts that let me mess with the panning a bit. I edited around the wave files on the cassette where nothing was going on to cut down on tape hiss (that helps noise levels quite a bit), cause I was using a $29 HiZ mic running directly into the 4-track. I use the EQ curves to cut out the high end too probably above 15K or so- that helped with some of the tape hiss too. There didn't seem to be anything but hiss up there anyway given my crappy mic.
The intro noise was the reversed tape trick where you flip the tape and record a part in reverse to get the sound like it's running up on you and smacking you in the face.

Wow. Awesome stuff man.
I don't usually listen to this style of music, but I really like it.
The guitar solos and harmonies are simply superb.
Make some more like this! |

llc,
thanks for the comments. it's much appreciated. I love it when somebody who's normally not into a certain type of music finds something they like about. Again, appreciated. |

Hey there. I'm not really a fan of this style, but I can definitely appreciate the great guitar playing and skill involved! I really digged the change at 02:26 in a slightly more melancholic atmosphere and Van Halen-like playing (I'm not really knowledgeable about this type of music, that's just what I can relate it to). The rhythmic sections afterwards are also really nice. The dual guitar part after about 4:20 even sounds a bit like a part from the melodic death metal band In Flames (maybe they stole it from you ) . The more positive mood solo is a good way to end the song. Great job! |
