Hi everyone I need your help. What is the best way to fill up a (roughly) 110x120 square foot yard outside with a bass, guitar, and drums. should i use regular amps for the bass and guitar, or should i use a mixer with PA speakers?
Thanks ahead of time. |

Hi Luna..
I've played many gigs in that size of yard. Hopefully your bassist and guitarist both have reasonably sized amps. If so, you could use a small PA for the vocals and let everyone else play straight through their amps, and of course the drums acoustic. If your guitar and bass amps are small you could mike them too, but if you do I would recommend at least a medium sized PA (2-way with 12 inch speakers) and at least 100 watts per channel.
Have fun!! |

My bass amp is 180 Watts combo. Our Guitarist's amp is a 100 Watts cabinet with an head. should we get rent a louder cabinet for the gig? |

I think those amps sound like plenty. What kind of music do you play? What will your singer sing through? |

Luna, I'm by no means an expert on this, but I'd think whoever's running the mixer would want to mic things a little bit any way to give some control of the sound from the mixing board... although I guess it's possible during the performance to manually turn amps up/down if the mix is way off and someone can communicate back to the band.
good luck |

Well, Our singer (who is also the guitarist) has a mic we hook up to the mixer. We also hook up my backup vocals microphone to the mixer. we then hook up the mixer to a 600 watt speaker. Im guessing we could probably hook up our amps to the mixer (6-channel) to get a little extra sound if needed. And we play punk rock mainly. but some Hard rock too. So i usually keep my bass punchy with a lot of treble, low bass and loud. |

I would suggest the guitarists having quadboxes, and the bassist a quad or oct box of somekind. and a small PA for the vocals. Shouldn't need any mics on the drums, but if you felt like it, maybe just the bass drum.
the less complicated the better for a backyard gig like this. no need to get mixing boards involved I reckon. Just make sure you sound check before the set to get a good mix.
