This is a song I wrote about the recent forest fires in California.
I could barely see the sun
Rising through the smoke
As our engine moved on through the dawn
And I could feel the wind blowing
Right through my coat
But we had to keep moving on
I could see the houses nestled
All along the hill
As the blaze crept closer to the walls
And I could hear the engine screaming out
A siren loud and shrill
A haunting high and lonesome kind of call
And with the fire raging on
Across the mountain ridge
Do you think that you could see the light?
I’ve gotta go now, babe,
But I hope you’ll understand
If I don’t come home tonight
I could hear the bushes crackling
As they were engulfed by flame
And steadily the fire drifted on
And I could see the brush create
A blackened picture frame
A tragic battle painted on the lawn
I could feel my back against the wall
Of a shaky mobile home
My only hope a hose clutched in my hand
But I couldn’t shake the feeling
As I stared down the unknown
That I was fighting on the site of my last stand
And with the fire raging on
Across the mountain ridge
Do you think that you could see the light?
I’ve gotta go now, babe,
But I hope you’ll understand
If I don’t come home tonight
The sun will rise tomorrow
And the air will clear again
As the ashes settle down forevermore
And the charred and blacken trees
Will be but a stain
On the vast still-smoldering forest floor
And if you’re ever driving by
Route 243
Staring out into the mountain view
Just stop a little while
And say a prayer for me
Cause I’m sorry that I couldn’t be there, too
And with the fire raging on
Across the mountain ridge
Do you think that you could see the light?
I’ve gotta go now, babe,
But I hope you’ll understand
If I don’t come home tonight
