She looks in the mirror and feels for a comb
Her blue eyes are hardened and pale
It’s ten after midnight and he’s still not home
And she’s wondering where she has failed
A car comes up the driveway, she runs to the door
She smells unfamiliar perfume
He says hello softly and looks to the floor
And trudges upstairs to their room
This paper-thin mask that you’re wearing
Did you think it was the perfect disguise?
I can see exactly where you’re staring
And I know why you avert your eyes
She sits in a chair by the living room window
And watches the sun going down
Her years living this life have started to show
And she knows that’s why he’s out of town
She opens a book from her old coffee table
And tries to focus on the words
She dials his number but she knows she’s unable
And silence is all that is heard
This paper-thin mask that you’re wearing
Did you think it was the perfect disguise?
I can see exactly where you’re staring
And I know why you avert your eyes
Her big house is vacant and frigid tonight
She huddles in her coat made of fur
He’s eating his dinner by a candlelight
All she knows is that it’s not her
She looks at a photograph framed by her bedside
Her wedding back in ninety-four
She knows though it hurts it’s a truth she can’t hide
She closes it up in a drawer
This paper-thin mask that you’re wearing
Did you think it was the perfect disguise?
I can see exactly where you’re staring
And I know why you avert your eyes
