"American Dream"
There’s a crazy newsman talking ‘bout a war that never ends
And a crazy bluesman singing ‘bout his wrongly murdered friends
I’m sitting on the corner, trying to write a song
But the people sitting next to me don’t seem to get along
Every time one talks, the other screams
Well, I don’t think I’ll ever wake up from this American Dream
There’s a politician talking about why we should care
Even though he hasn’t made a point hour he’s been there
His effervescent aide has come out to meet the press
But nobody’s talking because he’s standing in a dress
And it’s ripping all up and down the seams
But I don’t think I’ll ever wake up from this American Dream
Well, I’m walking to a music store, gonna buy me a cd
But all there are are cases, lined up nice and lookin’ pretty
The hair-dyed painted bombshell just doesn’t seem to stop
And nobody’s really sure why she ever got to the top
But they do know that she’s the undisputed queen
And I don’t think I’ll ever wake up from this American Dream
I tried to watch TV, I turned on the networks news
And the anchor she walked out in new designer high-heel shoes
“Nothing much happened today,” She said with a smile
“So I’ll sit here looking pretty and talk nonsense for a while
Or would you rather I get up and make a scene?”
So I don’t think I’ll ever wake up from this American Dream
The electorate is voting for its newest candidate
An upstart fifty-year-old who looked good at the debate
The people in the newsroom don’t really care what he thinks
As long as he can say some words they’ll immortalize in ink
The headline flashes that the new mayor’s skin is green
And I don’t think I’ll ever wake up from this American Dream
