AIDAN O'ROURKE INTERVIEW WITH CP LEE..

Why is Manchester so pre-eminent as a city of music?

That’s something I’ve often wondered about, but never found the answer to. Is it the weather? Or the geography, or maybe something in the water? I thought I’d put this question to CP Lee, who is one of the most knowledgeable people there is regarding the history of Manchester music.

CP Lee has studied the development of music-making in Manchester, and wrote the seminal ‘Shake Rattle and Rain’ a history of music in Manchester from 1955 to 1995, as well as two books about Bob Dylan. He is a lecturer at Salford University, and founder member of the band ‘Alberto & Lost Trios Paranoias’.

I was astounded to discover that the history of Manchester music goes back to the 18th century, and that the reason the success of recent decades is not some intangible magic in the air, but something much more basic, that most people wouldn’t have thought about.

Chris also talks about the echoes and interplay between America and Manchester, and why Northern Soul became such a phenomenon here during the sixties. He did an excellent programme on Radio 4 about Northern Soul. He mentions clubs, bands, singers, personalities, and also talks about the Manchester and District Music Archive, which he is helping to organise.

Eye On Manchester is privileged to present this interview with Manchester’s foremost music historian, presented in podcast format.
