This is a song that is partially derived from the old folk song "Scarborough Fair" (AKA, it shares a similar first verse). I wrote it on the plane back from Italy, on a "we want your opinion" sheet.
"Cold Mountain Air"
If you are going to the cold mountain air
Where frosty peakes meet tall green pines
Please give this letter to one who lives there
She once was a true love of mine
And if you see her walking alone
Through pounding snowand driving rain
Please take her hand and walk her back home
By the lonely tracks of the coal car trains
Tell me if her eyes are still fierce and still blue
Like the dark rolling waves that travel 'cross the sea
And you could swear that when she's looking at you
you could sit there in chains and still be free
And tell me if her face is still soft and still pale
And her golden hair so long and straight
Her voice so still so sweet and so frail
That it keeps the howling winds from her gates
And then give her this letter all tied up in lace
And ask her a question to absolve all my pain
For though I still can clearly see her face
Ask her if she still can remember my name
If you are travelling to the cold mountain air
Where frosty peakes meet tall green pines
Please give this letter to one who lives there
She once was a true love of mine
