This is a rough draft of a song about the plight of immigrants. t's a simple folk song, nothing more, partly inspired by "Plane Wreck at Los Gatos" by Woody Guthrie.

"The Wall"

It’s not dark yet, but it’s getting there
And the southwestern sun turns the sky bloody red
There’s a young girl hidden in the weeds with her daddy
A shack for a house and a floor for a bed

There’s a pair of headlights on the horizon
A highway of freedom in the mountains so tall
So close but so far, they almost can taste it
There’s a new life awaiting, just on the other side of the wall

A length of white rope and a hook out of steel
He makes his way slowly down the dirty old road
His young daughter tugs at his pant-leg, afraid
He quiets her gently and walks on alone

He comes to the base of the towering structure
As off in the distance a coyote calls
He throws the rope up and it catches the top
It’s just twenty feet to the other side of the wall

And there’s another man standing on the other side
The moonlight catches the trigger of his gun
He sees a shadow on top of the great wall
It jumps to the ground and then starts to run

The officer cocks his .357
The man hits the ground and goes into a crawl
He doesn’t get far, the officer stops him
Another statistic trying to get over the wall

Is this really the vision of hope and of courage
In our home of the brave and the land of the free?
They flock to our cities and flock to our orchards
Only to be sent back as deportees

Just think of the children who’re dying of hunger
Whose parents to get here would risk all
Just think of the families living on nothing
Who’d do anything to be on this side of the wall
