One thing you want to avoid when leaping around on stage with a guitar is having it fly up and hit you in the face. It hurts, and looks naff. Therefore, the thing you need to do is anchor the guitar so you don't bludgeon yourself. Whenever I got airborne on stage, I would make sure that the body of the guitar was under my right forearm, held against the bottom of my ribcage. This way, my left hand was still free to play, and I had some sort of control over where the guitar body would go when I did a radical move.
I guess it also depends on how high you wear your instrument - If your guitar is around your knees, then you aren't going to be holding it against anything except perhaps a kneecap, which is not a good look. If your guitar is in a position where it can be steadied with the forearm of your picking hand, you're off to a good start.
Good luck, and don't chip any teeth practicing... |

I'm gonna show my age here -
Remember the ZZTop videos where the spun the guitars around, like a clock. The strap was buttoned like on theback of the body of the guitar and the guitar would rotate like a clock. As long as it didn't get caught in their beards on the way around all was cool.
Also Steve Vai would throw his guitar over his left shoulder and catch it and keep playing after it came all the way around under his right arm.
And then there was the time on the grammies where one of the Nirvanah guys throws his guitar into the air during the set and it comes down and hits him on the head almost knocking him out. He's crawling around on stage half-concussed but the show goes on.
BTW, I've busted my forehead on my tuning pegs, still have the scar, blood dripping down my nose before I realized what had happened. Wish I could've said it was done while jumping off a drum riser or amp or something, but I was sitting on my bed practicing without a strap on and the guitar slid off my knee and up came the neck... |

Oh, one more thing...
Check the height of the ceiling over the stage before you do any of this jumping shit in public.
A long time ago, I took a very quick trip to hospital in an ambulance with a suspected sub-aracnoid haemorrhage (brain haemorrhage) after launching myself straight up into some angle iron supporting the stage roof.
Just like the kneecap thing - not a good look. |
