So, I was listening to Bob Dylan's first album the other day, and heard his song "Song to Woody." It's one of my favorite songs, I figured I'd do my own version. The tune is the same, it's actually a Woody Guthrie tune ("1913 Massacre"), although he probably picked it up from another old folk song. So, here it is:
"Dear Woody"
I'm sitting here writing, my pencil in hand
'Bout the things that have happened in this great land
Earthquakes and famines and bombings and wars
We're feeding the rich by eating the poor
Mr. Gutherie I know that you don't know me
But I needed someone to talk to freely
So I picked up the nearest paper I could find
I used one of your tunes, but I know you won't mind
A lot has happened since nineteen sixty two
When a young Bob Dylan wrote a letter to you
He's gone off to glory and righes and fame
And I'm inside writing on a cold winter's day
People come and go, and many things change
But others have lingered and some have remained
There's still politicians with speeches and things
Making themselves out to be Democracy's kings
Well I'll wrap it up because it's getting late
And for your response, I can't hardly wait
It's been since sixty-seven you've been buried and gone
But the things that you sung about, they still go on
Hope you like it.
