First thing in the morning...
I just assumed by the title that the topic was "Should you play your own songs as opposed to covers"...
Darn it!
No I don't think you should play your own songs all the time to get a better chart rating though that's not what the poll says |

why would you play covers to promote your own music , record companys aren't intrested in covers and why would you download a cover when you can just here the real version that is probably gonna be ten times better
if you wanna here some real songs go to http://www.unsignedbandweb.com/music/bands/5118/ |

I used to play all the tracks on my site once a day, but recently have started to notice people looking into my stuff more often.
I have found that surfing the site, listening to others material and leaving reviews does help you to get listened to, and actively encoraging others to leave reviews and doing the same back helps also.
I dont often play my own stuff anymore, not to bump it up the UBW charts anyway.

That sucks.. I wasnt even aware of the charts actually, I just wanted a bit of feedback on our songs! Just checked though and "I'll love anyone" by my band the W.I.F.E. is at no. 22 in rock so I guess thats not too bad. .. I think pushing your own band up in the charts with constant playing is a bit lame, and not a good representation of how many people like your music
(the smiley has no relation to my comment whatsoever, I just thought it was random and funny) |

I'll play my songs when I first upload them to make sure they're playable, after that not really, unless I get some feedback about the mix of a song and then I'll have another listen to evaluate the feedback.
I'd don't think it's cool at all to keeeeeep playing your songs to push them to the top. I've notice some people get sooooo much play in the 48 hour charts and they're always there. . . it's almost like that's all people listen to, and I don't think that many people are logged on ,guests or members, the numbers do not make sense . . .BUT I could very well be wrong ??

I wasn't aware you could even increase your rate by doing that, I'm so used to like other music sites like myspace, where you can't really do that. But that's interesting. Hope people don't to that often.. |

Hey Erick & Sheep,
Thanx for the feeback. I appreciate it. This is the reason why I posted this question, because I noticed some really "out of synch" stats as well. I guess I am just really trying to find out if everyone using this site considers this the norm to do (playing your own uploads to push up standings on charts). I've noticed a lot of views but not as many posts, I'm guessing people do it on a regular basis and just don't want to expose themselves.
There's so much really good music on this site it just doesn't make sense to always see the same songs/names in the same positions all the time.
Thanx again for the feedback!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I play my own stuff once in a while. I think everyone does, so what. But some people go over board just to get up the charts which can be kind of obvious which is farking dumb as it spoils the charts. .
Dagon's got the right idea, review peoples songs, hit the forums etc.and generally just do stuff and talk.
Anyway, time for coffee |

Appreciate this question. I do play my own songs, like everyone once in a while. I just posted a new song and was having problems with playing songs on my site, but finally got it right. Had some songs here last year, and pulled them because the genre i was in had the same band with the same number of plays in the top spot for over a month. I guess their vanity got the best of them. There have been a lot of changes made in the site, all for the better and we're glad to be back!

I heard about this problem from a certain Guitar playing Man about a certain box of dirt (inspecific enough? lol!) and I think it is just plain idiocy. If you think your songs are so wonderful, you shouldn't have to boost your own popularity. Listening to your uploads to confirm that they are working is acceptable, but this only needds to be done once, if the upload is working. Someone said something about listening to evaluate feedback and someone else said something about listening to it every once in a while. My question is why do you need to do that on the UBW or even on the net? Don't you have the original version stored on your computer or backed up on CD?? Why not listen to that?! If you don't have the original saved off net, then have you ever thought of what might happen if the UBW server and all the other servers crashed? You'd lose all your work! I seriously doubt that anyone is in this situation, but I hope you get my meaning.
If your stuff is good and original and popular, you'll get listens and downloads and your chart place will ascend. If not, and you're the only one listening, you're only fooling yourself and when people are fooled into listening becoz of the chart place (n00bz), you might get a few people to give you nice comments, or you might get some people enraged with dibelief at your popularity who will abuse you.
Enough, typing... my wrists hurt. |

When I first got here in June '04, I admit I did play my songs a bit-- until I saw that all my votes were getting counted. Then I stopped. Same goes for ratings. I rated my songs every day. But most of the ratings I gave were for other peoples' music. If I liked it a lot, I gave it a five. If I didn't like it, I didn't rate it at all. Of course, once I saw that I had an excessive number of ratings for my genre I stopped rating myself. And I haven't played my songs or rated them in over a year.
Along the way, my songs were picked my a number of site radio stations. But one day a server mistake-- which I promptly pointed out-- doubled my all-time number of hits in a single day, and every station dropped me. I guess it appeared I was gaming. And the fact was, early on I did. So I guess can't complain about getting dropped. Because I did engage in that my first weeks here.
Periodically, my two songs will spend a day at the top of the charts. I don't know who's playing them but it's not me. And you know what? It's a great feeling to have other people vault your songs up there, even if it's for a single day.
And if folks look down on me for playing games early on-- I can't hold that against them. |

Hey IML, spidey56, Optical_Delusion & Lazlow,
Thanx for your feedback!. I think everyone here does play their songs once in a while and I find no problem with that, I am just trying to see what is considered the "norm" in this area, and I appreciate all of your honest feedbacks on this!!
