Hey, I need a few ideas about a new riff. The genre probally metal or hard rock. If any body no's some good pointers on how to write on or no's an old one that would be cool.
Well look forward to hearing what u people have to say. PEACE

well the traditional way to solo is too find out what key your in, and figure out a cool way too cut up the pentagonal scales through it, but with metal (or at least the metal i listen too) it's about playing fast adrenalin scales into a one string barage of quick notes and pull offs. but too make a more popy solo were you have some long notes resembling the chorus into maybe something else is always fun.
I don't know what your song sounds like or how to solo over it but i hope this helps

i think IbAnEz05 was asking about writing a good riff, not really a solo.
The best way to come up with new riffs ive found is to just crank it up and jam (drop D can make it much easier.)
Try using different rythms, palm muting or muted strikes, or even rest beats.
and try not to stick to a one chord = one bar formula, mix it up and maybe even change key for a bit and back again.

another alternative is to look up the tab for a song you like a riff from and learn to play that, and get some ideas for a new riff from there.
hope this helps somehow.

Not sure about metal riffs, but playing over drum loops always helps for me.

After playing guitars for 9 years now and then not playing so much since my studio has exploded with business in the past 2 years or so, I've concluded that RIFFS SUCK.

I want to hear great songs. Riffs seam to be irrelevant to the quality of the song, in my opinion.

Just a thought.

. . .

wow man riffs are what make up great music, there are soo many, . . . . ie: I can't get no satisfaction, purple haze, money, smoke on the water, could you possibly imagine Time by Floyd with out that riff?? . .or all along the Watchtower with out those riffs or Stairway to Heaven or No Quarter, Saint Stephen . . .I can go on and on and on . . . I can't think of a great song that doesn't have a great riff involved!! I'm sure there are some, but I like a great riff. . .a lot of the music today isn't big on riffs because the players are lazy or simply uncreative enough to put the time in and work on it . . . .it's all about the money today and the look and packaging. .also the cheapest way to get things done . . . .I've talked to many people in the recording industry and they all agree that analog sounds better, , , but it's a digital world and with things like pro tools almost anyone can make a record, and make it quick and correct all kinds of mistakes with pitch control . . . .yada yada yada . .
anyway . . .sorry about the rant
BUT . . . . . .THERE'S NOTHING LIKE A GREAT RIFF!!!!!! Exclamation

PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE man, playing over drum loops is an excellent way. . .
