I've been in a band for about a year and a half now, and I feel I'm the only one striving to get out of the basement. (Where we practice) It's like I'm being held back. The problem is that my bass player is an amazing musician, and an amazing writer. He's so good that he's the only reason that I'm still there. I've suggested we leave the band and broaden our horizens, but he is too fond and complacent to leave with me. It's so hard to break a band up when you become friends with the members. I know I don't need them to make it in the business, but I need advice on how to break it off. What should I do? |

I know exactly what your talking about!! Except I've been doing it for 4 yrs, and there were 3 out of 4 band members who wanted to get out of the basement, but it only takes one to thwart that plan. It is really a sticky situation. Have you sat down with them to let them know your desire to get out and play? What are their intentions? I know alot of people that are content just to be in a basement jam band. Have you considered looking for another band to play out, yet still participate with some of the jam for fun sessions? it would be ashame to give up friends just because they don't agree with your goals. Best of luck to you!!

Some folks just like to play for the fun of it. Playing out means quite a bit of commitment and often quite a bit of work. A lot of folks who love the music don't love the "job" aspect a band can become.
Is there any reason you can't jam with your buddies but have a band that you play out with? |
