What gives a song that X-factor. Where you must play it over and over.
Age old question for sure |

I suppose X factor in a song would be different for many people.
There are songs that you may think are rubbish but others feel are brilliant, and vice versa.
I personally like stuff that has a shimmer to it (Most people dont know what I am talking about when I say this)
Stuff like Black Sabbaths `Heaven and Hell` album has a sound about it that I like, but which was missing from all of their previous and subsequent albums.
The `Love` album by the cult is the same, a shimmering black sound that sounds even better when you play it full blast from an old vinyl version.
X factor for me is when the music sends a shiver up your spine.
Some of my friends like music that I cannot stand, and the same goes for my favourites from other people.
Nowadays, it seems that when music industry types speak of X factor, they are refering to it in how many copies they can stuff up the publics ass.
Ive heard a couple of things on the UBW that gives me that feeling. Recently I listened to some stuff on UnProjects page that gave me that feeling.
I thnk if you can hear the love and craft that has gone into making a piece of music it helps. For me, good musicianship, good or appropriate production and a good evocative atmosphere are important, even before the words go on. If the music is correct, it can only help to heighten the impact of the words when they come.
Different sounds for different people I suppose.

I'm not 100% sure, for some songs, such as Metallica's Fade To Black, i just like, from the second the song starts. I agree ith Dagon on Industry types referring to X Factor as how many copies they can easily sell, but i would say that the X Factor in any song is when you like the song, plain and simple, i don't think there is any formula or real, fixed explanation of what it is. It just is |
