I know this will probably be a little bit controversial, especially with their possible impending reformation (To milk the cash cow perhaps?) but I honestly think that the Stone Roses must be one of the most over rated acts ever.
Ok. their first album was ok, but their second one sucked ass.
I saw recently on TV coverage of the Glastonbury festival in England, and Ian Brown the singer of the stone roses was on.
I noted the following points:
(1) The guy cannot sing, in fact, he cant even mumble in tune.
(2) The guy cannot perform, he is embarrasing to watch. He looks like a guy who has shat himself into his trousers but is determined to keep trying to dance in a busy club
(3) The audience loved him, but I cannot understand why. Maybe they couldnt hear him properly through the PA, while I could through the mixing board sound transmitted to tv.
I have actually seen him live myself, and I have to confess that I was sucked into the aura of the man, but then violently edjected back out when I discovered that he was the most talentless `Performer` of the music world that I have ever seen.
He sounds like an elephant vomiting through its trunk into a bucket in a large cave.
I have a live stone roses bootleg from their last tour in 95?
At one point on I am the resurection (Thats a laugh, `I am the dead erection` more like) Browns singing is so bad that it sounds like he has been temporarily replaced by Zippy from Rainbow.
I can now no longer listen to this album without pissing myself laughing, its called Rock garden if anyone is interested in trying to track it down, and it was from I think their Leeds town and country club gig. It went out on radio at the time. When it was transmitted on the radio, I heard it at a friends house (Hello Stu) He was a total roses freak and could see no wrong in them. However, upon conclusion of the radio gig, his faith in his favourite band was destroyed forever.
A combination of bad singing, and over zealous guitar wankery from Mr Squire, a man who at one point believed he was Jimmy Page (Which is funny as Page held together the greatest band in the world through ambition, while Squire destroyed both of his bands for the same reason. Ego mania)
Anyway, as I said, this is probably a controversial attitude towards the revered `Roses` but I welcome any comments. I hope I am not the only one out here who sees through the roses tissue thin rep.
Love,
Dagon.

the mondays were for me like the roses a pretty good tight band, but both were unfortunately spoiled by some incredibly bad singing.
At least you get a good laugh at shaun ryders singing. Browns is just painful. |

Couldn't agree more - I think the fact that serious drugs where very involved - and I am talking about the audiences - I reckon the aural equivilent to Beer Goggles what ever that may be took over - most people I've met who go on about the roses are ex-rave/dance wankers for whom the Roses were there "I listen to real music too and they are the voice of my generation" kind of thing. I quite like the vibe on his new stuff - over produced and talent buttoned to perfection - but he is a terrible singer with out a pitch shift! |
