Tammy: I completely agree with you on that. I can't stand egotistical musicians, and I've also always believed in musicians, within a band, all taking part in creating the music. If I ever get the chance to make music in a band, that is how I want it to be.
Also, There never truly is an actual leader. People who listen to music always seem to pick a leader out, but "leader of the band" is pretty much just an expression used by many people. If there were an actual leader, the band would be four (more/less) seperate band members, instead of a working unit that is comprised of all of the band members working together. I guess what I was trying to ask when I started this thread was, "Who keeps the performance (on-stage) from falling apart, the most?" -That is, as far as the rythm, tempo, etc. go.
I can't respond to Lazlow's reply. My eyelids are getting ready to drop for the night, without me in my bed. I'll come back though. Later! |

I'de have to say that the one who leads the band, is the one who makes sure everyone makes it to practice, always has drive, keeps the peace, and has a friendly personality. I don't think that instuments have anything to do with who leads the band. ( But I have a feeling that that's what you were asking) There is usually one person in a band who keeps things going, who is the rock, the foundation, and I don't think that it has anything to do with which instrument he or she plays. Just my opinion... |

I have found that the favourite bands I like are the ones in which everyone plays an active part in creating the band sound. Led Zeppelin, Rush etc. They are bands that create a unique sound because of all of the personalities within playing together. I find that with many bands that have only one leader, they may start ok but when that person loses inspiration, the whole band suffers. The best Zepplin song for me is In my time of Dying (If any of you have heard it) which has some awesome group playing. Rush are a favourite as they are only a trio but create the biggest intricate sound purely through some fantastic ensemble playing. Ive seen them live, and its amazing to hear. Geddy Lee is the voice, but many people could single out the drums, guitar or bass as well as the vocals as being the lead instrument, but take away any of those 4 things and it wouldnt be the same. Bands like travis for me sound weak because they concentrate only on the songs, while the music is sorely lacking. I have heard some people say that it is the vocals and the words that make a song, but without good music, I feel it falls down.
Pink Floyd are another band that were great because of the four members contributing (although Roger waters would have us believe otherwise, but check out his first couple of solo albums which are weaker because he didnt have anyone collaborating with him on the music) The best tracks on the wall are the ones where he allowed others to have a say.
This of course doesnt count for solo acts (like me) who dont have the safety net of others to help out. But I have heard some solo acts that I like (Alec Empire, VAST etc, who do quite well on their own.
I suppose its what you like at the end of the day that counts.
