I got an email from Archangel Media Group last week, saying they were interested in licensing some of my tracks. I was amazed, considering I hadn't contacted them myself!!! I spoke to someone at the company and they reckoned that it's for a number of extreme sports DVD projects with worldwide release (eg 1,000,000+ copies of one for O'Neills snowboarding).
However, they said they couldn't afford to pay for my music (small budget or something), but they'd give me various freebies (eg make a music video for me using some of the footage from the DVD, the possibility of playing live at one of their promotion events), plus include my tracks on a possible future soundtrack cd, plus over a million people hearing my music . It's all legit - I've got contracts to sign, but they've asked me to waive mechanical and royalties rights, so I can't get any money for it.
I haven't said "yes" yet, but I'm thinking about it. Anybody come across anything like this before? |

I see your point, but the oppotunity to gain exposure which may result in someone wanting to use your music with payment, is in my opinion worth it.
You can never get enough exposure |

That's what quite a few people have said.....and I think I'm beginning to agree. It would be great to sign with a major label, but I doubt if that's ever going to happen with my sort of music.
The contracts arrived the other day and everything seems ok - although I'm obviously not an expert! . At the moment, I think I'm going to sign and see what happens. At least I may be able to sell some of my own CDs on the back of using O'Neill's name |

agreed...
I think though, if you're a good artist, waiving your rights could not be the worst thing ever... as you can just write more. You just need to make sure there's not some sort of clause in the contract that fucks you over. |

Well......I've signed the contracts and sent them off, and wait to see what happens...
I got someone to check out the contracts for me and there didn't seem to be any "sign all my music away" clauses. Archangel have offered quite a few "non-financial" incentives and if I can sell a few CDs as a result of the publicity, then it's probably worth it. Apparently the DVD is due for worldwide release in August this year, so I'll see what happens then. |
