Hi,
I found your web site while looking for places to promote my sons band (I get to act as their temporary manager) and had a question before I join and upload any of the boys music.
I was noticing that all of these web sites ask that you agree to upload the music and allow them to use the music royalty free however and whenever they choose such as for compiling CD's of songs that may include yours and they can make money from the selling of those CD's and owe you nothing.
Is this common practice and is the benefit to the bands really worth giving up the right for people to use your songs to their benefit?
Thanks for the input, looking forward to adding the boys to some places on the net to get them more exposure.

I can only speak for the Unsigned Band Web, but I would assume many of my answers may pertain to the broader OMD (online music download) industry as a whole.
Over the past few years, the music industry has had a tremendous problem with on-line music copyright pirating. There have been and still are numerous programs and web sites that allow this kind of activity to occur, riding the edge of legality and forcing the recording industry to take strict measures to define what consititutes on-line theft, and when royalties should be payed. The umbrella of these measures is far reaching and affects even legal "unsigned band" sites, like the Unsigned Band Web. The problem is that there are still no universal set of definitions on what on-line music really is from a legal point of view.
Our TOS does not allow us to make money from manufacturing or distributing CD's. What it does do is to offer us some protection from a legal system that may define offering songs on the internet as being equivalent to manufacturing. That's where the manufacturing verbage comes in.
We have had some interest from our members to create a compilation CD, which we may pursue sometime in the future. If and when we do this, it will be done with each included artists consent, and at each artists request. The royalties from such a CD would also have to be agreed upon in advance by all parties.
We exist to give unsigned artists a place to showcase their songs, get constructive feedback, and sell their songs/albums if they like. Your sons songs would be available to all of our visitors and could be played (or downloaded if you choose that option) by anyone visiting our site.
All artist sales go straight to the artist through "paypal" and we take no % for the unsigned band web. Paypal does charge a small processing fee for processing the payment.
The ONLY money the Unsigned Band Web makes now is from artists that want MORE than the 15MB offered on the free account. This is enough for posting about 3 songs and a bio etc. If an artist wants more space to store songs, or the ability to sell their songs, we offer VERY affordable membership packages that will allow both of these.
This is a very complex subject, and I hope I've given you what you were looking for. Please let me know if you have further questions.
Wonderful of you to look after your sons band! Music was a HUGE impact on my young life! It gave me much more self confidence and a comfort for public speaking!
Take care,
Ron |

Hi Ron,
Thanks so much for explaining all this to me. I have added the boys to the web site and thank you for a place to get them out there and get them heard a little. They are not as seasoned as a lot of musicians here but they put a lot into it and keep working to get better.
I do what I can to help the band and support them because they are good kids and I am glad that they have something creative to occupy their time. We are currently building them a practice/recording studio in our back yard and hope as time goes on they will improve on their skills and follow their dreams.
Thanks again for everything,
Tammie

Great to see you got set up! 7 times over has a great "old school" punk style sound. Pretty unique considering how young they are! They have a lot of talent! Please let me know if you have any questions about the site or the page manager.
Take care!
