Hi
I am a grade 4 piano student but I'm really about grade 5 or 6, I have not went for my grade 5 yet because after that I will have to sit the theory exams before I can go any further and that needs more work.
I has just started a sound engineering course and the person I'm paired with is new to music and can't play any instrument, I have offered to teach him to play the keyboard, is this a good move?
Should I tell him what grade I am at and charge a lower rate because I'm a student myself ?
or should I go with the theory " As long as I stay one lesson in front of the pupil I can blag my way through it " ? |

Tell him what grade you are and still charge him the higher rate... It's not always about skill level, sometimes it's convenience!!!
Good luck!

yeah i had to do theory to obtain my higher grades,
if you have the ability to teach then charge him the going rates,i tried but couldnt do it,didnt have the patients or is that patience
if you dont teach him at least youll have the edge and will always look better than him lol |

yeah, you do little exams at the end of each grade to obtain your theory, you can obtain upto grade 5 without doing thoery but too go further you need to do theory.a grade also takes aslong as it takes, theres no set time like when u at school doing other subjects
the theory side is very usefull in composing, theres a little red book called rudiments and theory of music,,if u can get hold of this do so its like a bible for music telling you how keys are constructed and what chords makes them and y.also a history of cadences is another usefull book for composing |

Hi
Thanks for your input
I like the idea " if I dont teach him at least I'll have the edge and will always look better than him "
I hadn't looked at it that way
I feel sorry for the guy, he's paying someone £30 an hour for session work to write some music that him can mix and produce in the course, I don't know how many sessions it will take him but in my opinion it feels like a bit of a rip off, I'm shure he could get it cheaper than that.
If it was me I would be looking to get someones music for free and in return would give them a polished mix of there song.
I think I will tell him what grade I'm at and if he's not wanting lessons I'll try asking him if he wants me to write something for him.
On the theory side I'll have to look into getting that book " rudiments and theory of music" I use a little pink book called " The A.B of music theory " which is a bit head scratching at times I'm always looking for good theory books that use simple English and big pictures (books for dummies) all the main books make things sound hard till you put it into practice. |
