OK... first of all, good question. Secondly all of this is a matter of Maynard's BRILLIANCE. Neither band would be what they are without maynard's painfully deep lyric's and heart wrenching desperate vocals. But from a general musical viewpoint TOOL is the winner hands down. Perfect Circle is basically a dumbed down, radio friendly version of one aspect of what TOOL represents and presents as entertainers. As far as what the big deal about TOOL is... It is a combination of all the things you guys mentioned and more. It is the darkness and the frenzied time signature changes and the moodiness of the music and vocals that makes them stand apart. All of those things can be found in one band or another but for a single group to be able to pull it all together in the way TOOL does is unprecedented. What also must be took into account is the evolution that TOOL has made from "OPIATE" to "Lateralus" The maturing of the band as a whole is one of the best musical accomplishments of our time. Just the fact that these unbelievably great musicians were able to find each other and sculpt themselves into a top selling band without radio airplay or great fanfare from MTV and their like (that is atleast not before they had already established themselves and their fanbase) is a thing of the past and of great beauty.
Or atleast that is what I think about it....

I also vote for Tool, although I have everything of APC in my CD collection as well. I'm a huge fan of Maynard's Vocals. In Tool you get to hear more a screaming Maynard, whilst in APC you get the relaxing melodic part of him. |

If I were an instrumental musician I would choose TOOL hands down but I only know enough about music's structure to appreciate it's complexities secondhand.
So, that being said, I will vote for A Perfect Circle. Being a vocalist I really think Maynard did some amazing things on the TOOL cds but the range and difficulty of execution he showed, such as the bridge from "The Noose" on Thirteenth Step was simply put, breathtaking. The way he commands a song such as "Blue" with even the slightest tonal change is masterful. My biggest influence without question.

I think Maynard James Keenan is one of the only true artists left in music. Not to mention one of the last. The question of this board is a matter of taste and temperment. Personaly, I'd easily go with A Perfect Circle. I find the music more original in sound, and more lyrically inteligent. If I were judging it based on technical talent and aggression, I'd have to go for Tool. But I think APC better compliments the beauty of Maynard's voice, and his ability to make you think. APC songs are puzzles with multiple interpretations that bring out emotions other than rage. Don't get me wrong; I grew up listening to Tool, and I love their musical contributions. More than anytihng I'm a Maynard junkie. It really is a matter of opinion. |

Hey All,
This topic is very interesting, to say the least, and this question is one that, I feel, can only be answered in an opinionated manner. My views about this could go on, and on. But my pick shall have to be neither. I can get lost in the music of either band, for hours.
TOOL is legendary, and I'm not sure there will be another rock band like them for a long time, if ever again. I don't know what music would be like without TOOL, and I too, cannot wait until their new album comes out. When I hear a release date, I may very well faint.
On the other hand, I found a heavy interest in A Perfect Circle, before I started getting really into TOOL. "The Hollow", "3 Libras", and "Judith"... Those songs completely astounded me, and still do. I like everything off of "Mer De Noms", more than most of what was produced when they wrote "Thirteenth Step". Also, A Perfect Circle's music is much less Intricate than TOOL's, and I feel it has a very different sound. The one exception is the song, "Weak and Powerless". That song could not be more like (but not as good as) TOOL, unless it was TOOL.
Who do I like better as a live band? I'd have to say one thing about that: Ask in future times. I have seen APC live, and it was one of, or, the best show I have ever seen. Still I have not seen TOOL live. This next tour, though. When they come to my town, I am going no matter what. I am very confident that the experience of seeing TOOL, live, will be far more euphoric than the APC show.
That's what I think about that. I can assure you, I'm not undecided due to the fact that I'm unsure of who is more talented. I am undecided because I choose not to think about it, and make a standing decision. However, I vote for an early entry into the hall of fame for Mr. MJK. If anybody deserves it, that man does. Cheers All!

Tool for sure. I cant live a day without their music. Tool's musical style isnt what i would go for but they seem to stand out and the fact the songs, lyrics takes you to a different world then it goes to show how effective their music are. Pushit(Live) IS and WILL be my fav song in the world and im not just saying that. Such words he uses is outstanding and Tool are a god to me now for they have changed and helped so many people such as myself. They are the alltra power of music. No one will ever take their place, they are just that gifted.
As for APC they are the children of Tool young and popular. I love this APC but as one of u said their Tool wonna be but will never be. Words cannot discribe the feeling Tool's music have made me feel, the world has changed for me and I'm a slave to their music. |

Tool's gotta be the favourite. All albums/EPs were awesome except maybe Undertow.
APC on the other hand are just crappy for most of their songs, probably a lot to do with the lack of Carrey's insane drum grooves. He's the most underated drummer in existence.

I gotta agree with Lydern. APC is a good band, and those who are more into the lighter hard rock scene may actually prefer them over TOOL. Some people may prefer listening to a song like TOOL- "46 and 2", but others might favor a song like "3 Libras", by APC. Alright, I already said a lot when I replied to this thread before, so cheers and smiles!
