I'm not a keyboard player, but I got an Alesis Nanopiano (might can find one on ebay) for use with a controller for when I record. It has a pretty good set of sounds for not alot of $.. might be cheap on ebay.

Second hand I've long been a fan of the Korg M1. It was the first keyboard I ever used I could figure out without reading the book!!!
It's also upgradable so need not have dated sound bank - If you're using a computer though why not just get a cheap mid keyboard and "Limewire" a bunch of synth banks and effects. If you're on a PC I strongly reccommend SoundForge for effects(Again really simple to use!) and I'm sure Alek or someone will have advice on a good sound bank! Get the names of what you're after and then Limewire them! All you pay for is the keyboard and midi interface. Hope that helps. |

Hi
I have had a lot of synths/keyboards over the years and by far the best make is Yamaha, Korg gets the best name at the moment but comes with a bigger price tag and the sounds are not that much better than Yamahas.
I would stay away from Roland, they make good drum machines but there keyboards suck.
When I am writting something new the first synth/keyboard I reach for is my Yamaha CS1x which always has the right sound no matter what style of music I'm writting in.
If you are looking for a good board you should consider this one, type it into your search engine and you will see nothing but good reviews.
The CS1x is based on Yamaha's 1980's synth the DX7 which was 1 of Yamahas biggest ever selling models and I think just about all the songs from the 80's had a DX7 on it.
It has a good pedigree and the best thing is it's " cheap as chips " because there are newer models out now. You could pick one up for about £100+ on ebay |

i would go with the MICROkorg....its the most user friendly synth i have found for under $400 dollars, and has endless possibilities. Ive used it in my band for ALL our beats. It has EXCELLENT bass patches. and everything is fully able to be tweaked. listen to my mp3's if you want to hear it in use. |
