If anyone could listen to this demo recording and give me some advice on recording techniques or things that may have been done better I would appreciate it. Also maybe some comments on the vocals could help. Thanks

Hi there.
First off the recording sounds fine to me. But i would say add a little more body to vocals. They tend to sound kinda flat (not outta tune flat). It's tough in punk and metal to add too much without coming over too emo.
Give the bass a boost, maybe try and distort the mic slightly. |

HI Flak...
Welcome to the Unsigned Band Web!!!!
Listening to Puppet Government now..... First of all AWESOME job with the mix and level of playing by all instruments. Reminds of some of the early days of metal when there was still a touch of 'punk' mixed in. Great job... I'm looking forward to hearing more!!!!

Listened to much of all 3 tunes.
Overall I'd say recording is decent. The drums are not quite as present as they might could be, but that's often hard to get without capturing an excellent sounding kit, in a great room, with an excellent drummer with some pretty good equipment. I've yet to figure out drum micing to get the sounds like I hear on the radio - it's elusive to me. That said - the sound you have isn't bad at all.
This style is not what I normally listen to, but on the vocal side, there's a little bit of fx on there that didn't sit well in the mix. not sure it it's a really fast delay or some type of reverb, but bothered me a bit given the musical context. On one of the mixes I thought the vox might have been a tad out in front too much (melancholic).
This is all pretty picky stuff though... overall you've done a good job.

Hey dude, I listened to the quality and I say not too bad at all good work. My band recorded our demo at a studio(My Own Reflection, Blame, and Again) and we we're really dissapointed with the quality so we went out and baught a $4000 digital recorder and are doing it all ourselves out in a garage. I have a song from that, it's called Fragile, we're recording our entire 14 track album this way, and I was hoping i could some honest opinions on the Fragile recording so we can learn and go from there. Thanks alot.

I checked out your stuff...I think the production of Fragile is excellent. I can't add anything to help you there, it was perfect. My Own Relflection was of lesser quality as you mentioned. The guitars and drums seemed too closed of...bassy i guess. Blame was in between...the distorted guitar was of lesser quality but everything else was fine. The vocals in all three songs are great though. Awsome songs...keep up recording on that digital recorder...what exactly did you get and what kind of mics are you using?..thats really amazing |

Thanks man, yeah for the Blame, My Own Reflection, and Again, we recorded those in a studio and we we're very dissaspointed with the quality we got after seeing all the thousands of dollars they had spent on the board and all the shit they have there, so we decided to do it on our own. For vocals we used this special condensor mic, that we got for free after purchasing the digital recording board, its a $300 mic. With everything else we used the mic's we already had that we use at our show's sorry but I don't know exactly what mic's those are. Fragile is the first song we've recorded in the garage with our stuff, and we plan on recording 13 more and then doing the art work and such, then getting it mass produced. The more we record, the more new songs will be on here. Thanks for listening |
