Ron, you rock man. I appreciate your tenacity to run this site so well. Too bad the moderators are the the overall reviewers as well. If only there was a way to incorporate mandatory reviews before posting songs. Everyone wants a review but given the option, not many people do. I have notice your point system of course. I hope this is inspiring folks to get more involved in reviews.

Also, as a suggestion, instead of asking people to place the genre in the subject box, maybe you could just topically set the forum up in genres to begin with. That way people could review the genre they are interested in. I only want to review metal songs for example. That is, I am most qualified in this genre.

To the bands here; take some time and review some of the great music here. It may help your careers to receive more reviews as well. So, participate people.

Regardless, this site is going places.

I've been thinking this for a bit...but there's pitfalls to it too. I know a lot of sites state you won't get reviewed if you don't review...kinda "you scratch my back" etc.

But also, myself not excluded here, some people won't review genres they know nothing about...I try, but feel inadequate say, reviewing electronic stuff.
Cool etc. can only go so far.

You can lead a horse to water - but you can't force it to review songs in an intelligent and positive manner without some form of genetic therapy is what I always say.....

Good points - well made - but at the end of the day - this is what the world is made of - there's a good reason why you get paid alot if you make it in this industry - alot of what you talk about is part of the life - and it's not always right or fun - just the way shit is - Dig?

Thanks for the discourse everyone...

I would like to add a couple thoughts to the already great points here....

1) review's by genre... Already in the works, but we need the volume to support various review threads, and we don't have it... YET Exclamation As we continue to grow we will CERTAINLY be adding additional review threads. For the time being I think it's better to keep everything together.

2)the points system... I REALLY think the points system can be a huge factor in encouraging reviews & building the community in general. I haven't gotten the store "FULL" yet, but that's in the works. If you get FREE stuff just for reviewing bands, then how does that go wrong? Again, more people and a full store will be the remedy there.

3)I am trying really hard to encourage more people to start their own review threads. Thus far we have u4ea and unproject specializing in Electronica, you have brooksy specializing in lyrics, and Michael Frazier is doing the 'occasional' acoustic/rock reviews. As we grow, I would like to have 2 or 3 "specialists" (moderators) for every genre. They would basically drive the reviews and moderate their respective threads. It just takes time.

Our GROWTH has been great, but we still have some growing to do to 'fill out' some of the genre's that bring in less traffic. I forsee doubling in size over the next 5-6 months. This will surely help the community aspect of the site. One thing I think is worth mentioning is the 'quality of members' that we have here. I'm really quite amazed at how smart, helpful, and friendly our members are! I've been a member of quite a few sites and I think we really have something special. I would like to continue our growth in such a way that we can 'maintain' that personal aspect that makes the site great!

Thanks again for your great feedback. We have come A LONG way in a short time, thanks to all of you, our members!!! There is a lot more in store for the future, the best is YET TO COME!!!!!!!

Take care,
Ron

This is going to sound nastier than I mean it to be but here goes anyway - Reviews I for one respect tend to come from people who you've witnessed rinse people(no doubt worthy of a good rinsing!) before - ie. pure positive can sometimes undermine the intention of reviews. This would imply that if anyone fancies becoming the UBW official arsehole - their reviews would actually wind up carrying more wieght etc etc -- you know what I mean. Ultimately some people want to hear honest opinions and some just want a pat on the back - maybe the site should find a way of catering for both in a way that can be identified by members and users. Just a thought. (Playing in a gigging band sure does toughen you up!!!!!). P.S Agree with all the above points but on the whole - if 96 people listened to our tracks and only 10 reviewed it, and one got in contact to ask for a CD - that tells me plenty about how our music is being recieved - (sorry - I say "our" because a band is more than one person)
Keep up the good work. You're pushing into the unknown and you're listening to peoples opinions so RESPECT!

Soulfish - I know where you're coming from and I may be somewhat at fault for "back patting", but I really do try to only review if I actually have something positive to say. If a song does nothing for me I just don't respond.

I do try to post constructive criticism when I post, but find it's best couched in "this is cool .... this part didn't work for me... etc"

btw - I contacted someone in the band about a CD... You gotta admit It's kindof hard to find info on a CD though, either on the band page here or on the band's site Very Happy

Developer,
First I would like to say that this could be a prodomnant website. There is a large market of people desiring a forum of fresh music. I believe with a couple of artistic and marketing additions this site would be the on-line version of American Idol
