KYLIE MINOISE AND USURPER HIT THE ROAD FOR LIVE AKTION:-
Tues 21st June - Leeds, The Common Place, with BIRDS OF DELAY
Thurs 23rd June - Manchester, The Phoenix with BIRDS OF DELAY and SAD FUR
COAT
Fri 24th June - London, Klinker
Mon 27th June - Brighton, Marlborough Theater with BLOOD STEREO
KYLIE MINOISE
A new project from Glasgow by Opaque/ 8M Records founder Lea Cummings. with his
low-end guitar drone/ improv unit Opaque, Lea has toured extensively: the UK and
Europe. he has performed alongside Sunn 0))), Goem, Boris, Hototogisu and more.
his music has been released by labels such as: Fat Cat, Nidnod, Consume, Dental
and Celebrate PSI Phenomenon and gained enthusiastic reviews from The Wire,
Igloo and a myriad of websites. Kylie promises to be an equally exciting
prospect. past performances have seen Lea’s entire body micd up and been
excessively loud. Kylie is constantly evolving so who knows where he’ll be at
now. Kylie’s first cd “From Crude Surgeries Without Anaesthetic To Enforced
Incest” has just been released on the Kovorox Sound label.
USURPER
An Edinburgh based duo performing improvisational experiments with disabled
instruments. i.e: the sound of stringless guitars, drumless drumkits, reaking
peddles, voiceless vocals, throat clicks, snapping plectrums, etc. Often quiet,
occasionaly not, always raucous. so far Usurper have won over noise, art, metal,
punk and electronic audiences and count James Plotkin (Khanate/Scorn) and Tom
Greenwood (Jackie O Motherfucker) among their fans. Alasdair Robertson
previously played in noise/ sludge/ heaviosity unit Gian Tank. Malcolm Duff
previously played in lo-fi types Pizza Boy Delivery and swamp-rockers Gilded
Lil, but is more famous for his “Rrobots” and “Zero Termite” comic books.
Usurper’s new album “Go For It” has just been released on the Giant Tank cd-r
label. another album, probably called “Quit While
You’re Ahead”, is due to be released by Kovorox Sound. |

Hi, Al Douglas here from the company wildplum.
We stage signed, New and developing Unsigned bands at some of the best music venues in the country (Barfly, Meanfiddler Group, AMG - Carling Academy's - Hard Rock, Underworld, ULU - University of London and the Marquee. Over the years of staging bands like The Ga Ga's, Supergrass, Stephen Fretwell and may talented New developing bands like Kubb, The Riffles, Brigade, Ghotti and Battle, not one have we ever come across a band called Jackviper.
We know this because we have a list of 7000 bands who we have either staged, seen or have recived demos from.
Jack Viper wrote: AVOID Al Douglas AT ALL COSTS - he's a complete rip off merchant...only in it for the money, doesn't give a sh*t about the quality of bands he puts on, and charges you 80 squids to play (boycotte any pay to play gigs in any case, its out of order man and a total breach of our rights as musicians, The borderline even pays you 40 squids whether you bring any fans or not.
Well Jack Viper if you are a real band, make sure you have your facts right, bear in mind that there is also a PLUM Promotions that works in London, with a nice chap also called Al who looks after various venues. Do not get us mixed up, we are separate companies. All the venues I work for have a no Pay to Play policy. We advance all our performing bands between £40 and £60 before they perform, but saying that if your stateing that you get paid £40 for bringing fans or not - I hate freeloaders, I love bands that take thier business seriously and work hard, we don't stage bands as a favor, it's a business to get bands noticed and to get good bands in quality venues. You are taking the piss if you turn up to a major music venue to gig with other bands, where the other bands have naturaly pulled in their fan base to rock the venue and you just turn up with no fans for £40 - this is wrong and not fair, this is why we stage quality, commited bands.
WoW I'm going of on one here. Please Please before you go slagging of Organisers or Bands please go to the source first, please complain to the venue so it can get some attention or complain directly to who you THINK it is. You can contact me a www.wildplumNetwork.com

Hi Al,
I had forgotton all about this post, which I did write when I was very annoyed. Heres Jackviper's side of things:
Firstly, you are right, it would have been more professional to approach the promoter first to clarify facts, so for that I apologise. Secondly, its also true we have never played a gig with you. This is because we were warned away by not one, but two bands who we are friends with who have. It could well be that we have you mixed you up with another promoter (Im aware of Plum Promotions, they promote for the Water Rats, so I know its not them), but if you used to promote at Equinox in Leicester Square in 2003/2004 (which you did), and The Camden Underworld (which I believe you still do), then I dont think we have. As far as weve been told, both these bands received an agreement from yourself prior to their gigs (in 2003/2004 as I understand it) which they had to sign and return to you along with a cheque for 80, and apparently both bands were given hassle when they got in under 25 punters. That sounds like pay to play to me! I see from your website youve now changed this pol icy, and that is great, I applaud that, but it seems that you used to, hence the heated post!
As far as working hard, I hate freeloaders too Al, and as far as Jackviper gigs go, we take them deadly seriously. Anything up to six weeks before each of our gigs we begin an intensive flyering and poster campaign around the area of the venue (weve twice nearly had an ASBO from Camden Council for doing it so much), pay for advertising space in numerous publications and extensive internet promotion. We also go to the gigs of signed bands we feel are similar to us in style, and hand out flyers at their gigs too. We have street-teams and e-teams in place and they also do the same. The result of this is that we have a big loyal fanbase, and we get a good crowd to every one of our gigs. This band is the most important thing our lives, and no one can say we are not 100% committed.
The thing that annoys me about pay to play, is that the promoters who operate that policy book back the artists who bring the most fans regardless of how good or naff they are, and stitch up some really great bands just because theyve had a bad night on the audience front. It becomes more about headcount than developing true grass roots talent. Even when the bands get reimbursed if they get enough people through the door, its still out of order. Yes, the promoter has to cover costs, but so does the bandrehearsals, studio time, advertising space, flyer production, petrol money, server hire for website etcand the thing is, its in both parties interests to get a good crowd down, and making a band pay money upfront is out of order in my opinion and against MU guidelines! Clubs dont charge DJs to play music until there are enough people through the door!
Again, I see from your site that you support many of these view too now, which is good. However, we have it on good authority that you did used to operate like this (like I said, I could be, and I hope I am wrong), and at the time of writing the post, as far as we were concerned you still did conduct business like this hence the nature of our post. Ive been told you also ran a name and shame campaign for a while, e-mailing everyone on your mailing list telling them about bands who didnt bring enough people down to your gigs (if this isnt true, then fair enough but if it is, I think that is totally shocking!) If true, then it strikes me a bit pot calling the kettle black. Surely in this instance it would be more professional to approach the band themselves and address you grievances with them? However, theres always two sides to every story, and I would be interested in hearing yours.
If you did used to run business the way Ive been told you did, I cant really apologise for being really annoyed with that.
Like I said before, Ive checked your site and it looks like youve changed your methods and that is great, and your promotions company does look like a great way for unsigned bands to help themselves and eachother out, so well done.
I also believe that unsigned bands need to fight their corner sometimes as there are a lot of injustices in the industry (which I know first hand as I also work for a major label), and when I hear about this type of thing going on, it really does fire me up!
I hope Ive gone some way to explaining our side of the story, and hope the air is cleared. |

Alright dude, i would really appreciate it if you could forward me the number for the promoter linked to plum promotions. My band The Zapatistas already deal with plum but this guy could be useful as well.
Cheers for your help,
Chris |

Hey, I live in Northampton, but i'm really looking to doing some stuff in london.
Is there any way you could apss on a few numbers? I don't write my own stuff at the moment, but I do a lot of places where I sing covers, all of which have gone down well, so it would be interesting to see if there was anywhere in london - even just small places - that I could sing at.
Thanks

Wildplum offer you a gig, then send a demand for £140. If you don't send them £140, you cannot play, it's that simple.
That is the very definition of pay to play! |
