thanks Michael, I know the electronica is not your cup of tea, especially the more experimental stuff, so no hard feelings, the reviews are still appreciated and maybe more valuable as they are totally objective. If you ever get into more edgy stuff you should check out a magazine called "The Wire'', from England, great stuff, even the lyrical, acoustic artists get out there in the weird zone sometimes
peace

I was a bit abrupt in your review and I apologize for not at least honoring your desire and the making of the music. After all, people make the music - (I often forget that when listening to electronica) and music does influence people. The recording was nicely done - very clean and clear and your abilities for playing are duly noted (somehow it always feels redundant to say this with electronica musicians because it is all so programmed) and it does have a hypnotic soothing quality to it. (It's easy for me to forget that someone is actually playing the notes of the programming with a human feeling in themselves.) So, I just want to say that I honor your musicianship. You have the abiltity to turn your feelings into music through electronics and if that is your calling I should take heed of your pride in doing so. I am unable to feel it the way you do but that in no way diminshes what you record. I bang on my acoustic guitar and write some lyrics to get something out of myself. Why should anyone like that? We're really not so different. Thanks for the opening and best of luck to you and your musical endeavors. Michael |

Really - everyone asking for a review - please take time to send Michael comments on his stuff. He puts in a ton of time on the reviews here.

First off lets be checking our link methodology. I appreciate you at least leaving a link to your site this time but it is stuck to the regular text so it does not work. For me to listen, I need to leave this page, paste your link in my browser, find a song and then return to this page to post a response. Not all that much time consumed but a bit annoying. AND that's the time I would usually use to listen to your song. Please check your own link in the future. After making a post go back and try the link. If it doesn't work then edit your post accordingly until it does. I checked out some of your other posts and it seems to be hit and miss. Just so you know, not trying to put you down, just educate. I know the dark background here and the dark buttons sort of hide stuff - the edit button is on the right hand side at the top of your post.
Anyway, on to the music review. Classic 90's pop. Just like some of the artists you mention. Very commercial formula stuff. Good beats, rhythms and changes and I really liked the vocals in this tune. Well done, not only vocal quality but the different voices, the timing and the mix. The guitars are a bit overdone for me, a slightly softer approach would be more listenable but you seem to really like that destruction kind of edge. Lyrics seemed alright - wish they were posted as some of the others so I could follow along. Bass and drums were solid throughout. Great tune I thought. Sounds like something I'd hear on a couple of radio stations I visit on occasion. Mix felt pretty smooth and the song construction provides continuity and keeps it from feeling repetetive. I hear Alanis type stuff here without the softer side. Best of luck to you in your musical endeavors. You have some obvious talents, and I imagine a number of friends and contacts, that should carry you well into you future. Michael |

Michael Frazier reviews Vainglorious - Break
Hey David, never let yourself feel intimidated. You are what you create. Personally, I like the song. It is very mild in the approach for this subject - a wake up call for all those commercial whiners out there singing about their lost loves - Damn I'm tired of that! They need a lesson from you. There's is a great tenderness in your vocal and lyrics that sugggests the hurt and still calls the hope. The guitar is simple as far as composition though you play it well, it sounds good and it designs the feel of this tune quite well. I wish you had the lyrics posted. Sounds well recorded and mixed to this listener. This is a nice piece of work. Let me know if you post more. Very much enjoyed the listen. Michael
PS: feel fre to listen to any of my material and let me know what you think. |

Michael Frazier reviews Tracy Starr - Stand Up
This song is another reason why the post reads ACOUSTIC SONGS! I don't care for this style of music. Fortunately my player crashed so I only had to endure about 40 seconds. Just not my thing. If it was I'd have a post asking for blow my head of thrash rock. Michael
Oh by the way, don't make the next reviewer search for you - post a link please. |

Michael Frazier reviews - Odessa
I listened to all 4 tunes you have posted here.
First off, thanks so much for posting the lyrics. So many people leave them off their song and I much prefer to follow along. Helps me get a better feel of what might be between the lines.
Sounds like you have been playing together a while. Music is smooth in it's timing. Songs are well written with a lot of interesting changes. Somebody's a music major or at least did a bunch of personal study. The lyrics are pretty well written though they got a bit repetetive in a couple tunes. Felt like all the songs need at least a short break from the vocal with a musical interlude just to keep it fresh. Overall, each tune was very welll constructed and the instrumentation and musicianship was solid. Recording quality was quite listenable and I really like the vocal quality. The main vocal is strong yet smooth in each tune and the harmonies added a very nice touch. I felt a bit of southern blues feel in Chump and liked that a lot. I'll Be Fine felt the least down in message, offered a bit more hope than the others. Always late seemed the weakest to me and Chump and Lecher are very similar in theme.
Anyway, thanks for the listen. Some of the better quality music I have heard on the various sites I frequent in terms of putting all the pieces together. Best of luck to you. I enjoyed your work.
PS You're welcome to check out any of my stuff and let me know what you think if you are so inclined. |

Michael,
Id like to first say that I check out your page and I really, really (I cannot emphasize really enough) Dig your style of lyrics as well as music! Very tastefully done, it shows and extreme amount musical muturaty. Would love to collaborate on a project with you. Secondly, that being said I respect your musical opinion and would like you to check out my page www.unsignedbandweb.com/Nod_Ran_Off And also the page of a project in which I am a part www.unsignedbandweb.com/Hybrid Please give me your honest review of both. I welcome all input and feedback. Again I enjoy your tracks and I look forward to hearing from and possibly working with you. THANX!!! |

Michael Frazier reviews Vainglorious - Sunday Morning
Sounds perfect for coffe on a Sunday Morning. Very relaxing. Guitar is nicely done and you have a solid voice that stays smooth sounding. I like the lyrics as well. Recording is nice and clean and the mix is well done. A solid piece of work. I will note that there is extra time at the end that could be cut as there is what sounds like a tape recorded being stopped at the very end. Otherwise a very solid song and performance. Thanks for the listen. Michael

Michael Frazier reviews Nod Ran Off and Hybrid
Hey Josh. You are a talented guy. Bass, Drums and Guitar. Pretty impressive. Although this isn't really acoustic with all the crunchies, I will honor your request for review because you asked so nicely.
Nod Ran Off - I listened to all 3 tunes you have posted. Generally decent tunes. Guitar work is pretty good for the most part though I do notice some timing issues occasionally where everything falls out of synch for a measure and then falls back into place. Why is a soid old stye rock tune and pretty well done. Loverman is another decent song but the vocals are really buried on this one - too bad about those files. I hate it when that happens. Cool blusey groove to this one and solid guitar work. Hi Again has an interesting casual style to it though the mix sounds a bit overdriven in spots or the cruchy guitar is just a bit loud. The drums on this tune sound overeffected to me and they fall off the beat around the 3:00 mark for a bit. Still a decent song.
Hybrid - Even more cruch to this sound, maybe too much especially on Don't Go Away. It really covers the vocals. That last note in the chorus pattern just sounds weird and out of place to me and the vocals in the chorus feel choppy. There is a spot around the 2:30 mark where the guitar feels out of sych. Solid rock style tune. Slave - I like the feel of the tune but again that crunch feels overdone to me and a bit loud. The lead seems to kind of wander outside the flow of the song on this one - doesn't really fit the mood that the rhythm part creates.
Got some solid ideas, a decent voice and lots of talent. Mixes are in need of a non-guitar player ear I think - someone who was a bit more objective. I know what that's like. There are those occasional timing issues and I know what that's like as well having done a lot of solo recording. Anyway, I enjoyed the listens and hope your future endeavors bode well for you. Not exactly sure how we would work together. Let me know if you have some specific idea(s). Thanks for the listens. Michael |
