Michael Frazier reviews Jinja - Transmission

Hey there guys. Obviously some talented players. A very driving tune in the hard rock style. Mix feels pretty solid and the parts are all well played. Vocal is right on time and pitch and edgy fitting well with the instruments though sounds a bit low in the mix when the guitars ramp up. Bass, drums and guitars are are tight and the musicianship is up there. I'd enjoy the tune more with the lyrics posted so I could follow along. Like the first 28 seconds the best. I know, that's only the intro to the slamming but I'm not a big fan of the slamming. Best to you all. Michael

Michael Frazier reviews Opposed 1

Hey M Siranni thanks for posting. This is some real relaxing stuff. Upfront I have to tell you I'm not a big fan of this kind of electronica music so take this review with that in mind. I really like the relaxing smooth style you have put together in your three tunes.

Mist in the Mountains is a bit stark, as well it should be to reflect that kind of image. It's very meditative music, though I found this piece a bit longer than it needs to be to capture the feeling as I noticed the sequencer taking over the flow. I also thought that for this long of a piece it needs some additional instrumentation - a new sound, a countering melody - to keep it from entering into sameness. Acoustic guitar would be cool as well as any true stringed instrument. Electric guitar could work very well also. The last couple minutes some great licks would really pull it through.

The Road Less Travelled - I liked the feel of this one best. Nice groove and flow to the music. I like the offbeat drums and the instument sounds you selected - some of my favorites as far as samples go. The drums are nice and clean, clear and crisp. I still think it needs one more top instrument to add a new sound and melody and movement. This one I could have listened to for another minute or so given the above addition. The ending seemed a bit abrupt.

Release - I like the beginning - gets the tune moving. Then it feels like it wanders into this questioning world but it's still kind of stuck on that original thing and now back again to the beginning. Then it kind of re-starts the cycle. I know that's an oversymplification but it sort of all blends together back to the original part which I suppose it should. The stark piano is a nice addition - that's what I meant about an additional istrument in the 2 songs above.

Anyway, bottom line from this reviewer is you have a lot of talent. You are able to play instuments and develop patterns that you can call up later and you have a nice ability to weave sounds together. All 3 tunes have nice qualities and I could see falling asleep to this type of music or hearing it in the background of a movie. For me it feels / sounds too contrived to be an everyday type of tune. It lacks the human touch to the instruments feel. It certainly is solid work though and I very much enjoyed listening. Best of luck to you in your musical future and enjoy the ride. Michael

Oh by the way, all 3 of these tunes are in 4/4 time. The drums may be hitting quarter, eighth, sixteenth or thirtysecond notes but the songs themselves are in 4/4/.

PS Feel free to listen to any of my tunes and send me a note.

Hey, thanks for the review. Some great comment there. I see you also are from Oregon.

The beaver state baby!!!

I listened to three of your first listed tracks through UBW, and enjoyed your creations.

The first song listed, probably my favorite, was a bit of a suprise. I really like the opening riff that continues through the song. It reminded me of a bluegrass riff, yet not so stale and county.

Your vocals are also enjoyable. You seem to have great volume control with your voice. I comes across in the recording.

Thanks again for your review of mine, and the others on this site.

Peace-

Michael Frazier reviews Ghotti

First up - Lately -
Hey guys this is a very good feeling tune. I like the flow of this one. Very smooth. The stacked up vocals are very effective, and placed in all the right places - they create a really full effect and are well recorded and mixed. Decent lead to keep the change going. Playing on the chorus works well - makes it pretty commercial sounding. Very solid musicianship and a clear, clean recording. Solid vocals all the way around. I'd lose the "Lately" in the repeat line at the end of the 1st verse. Change it to something else. Otherwise I thought the writing was quite good. I liked the construction and the orchestration of this tune. A well writen and well played song overall. A very pleasant listen. Thanks . Nice work all around. My hat's off to you. All the best, Michael.

Next Cried You A Storm - Another very sweet sounding tune. You have a very solid overall sound. I love the vocals - good voice and tha nice placement of the back ups. Solid musicianship once again and good songwriting. Some of the best I've heard here. Geez, what else is there. This is a great tune. My hat's off to you. All the best, Michael.

I would welcome you to listen to my tunes at the link below and leave any comments you may have. Thanks again for the listen.

Michael Frazier reviews Spidey & The Webs - Black Widow Bite

Well guys, I like it. It's fun, gotta cool groove and a great sexy twist on spiders and a great spider play on women. The acoustic solo might be a bit hot and I'm not totally sold on the effects and the resulting tone. Pretty solid musicianship on this one and well written musically. My friends and I use to call this kind of stuff - loose but tight. Sounds a bit liveish, absolutely not over produced. Solid lyrics and pretty darn creative. Hope the title wasn't derived from direct experience of a real spider. I think you guys should get more serious and quit having so much fun. OK I lied. I'm just jealous of the good times making music it sound like you are having. Keep on my fellow travellers, making music and having fun. Michael.

Michael Frazier reviews glitterstar - Neverending

Powerful, angry and full of sorrow. This song feels like life torn apart. Sort of a Melissa Ethridge type tune. Recording is pretty well done as are the lyrics and the guitar playing is solid throughout. Overall sound varies a bit too much for this listener in terms of volume. I find myself turning it up a bit and then you belt out some lyrics and they blow my head off. Seems like a compressor might be valuable on that vocal power to keep them in the overall song volume. Sounds like a lot of angst went into this one in all facets and I truly hope that writing and playing it helped you move beyond. No one should ever have to carry this kind of weight neverending. Best of fortune. Michael

Michael Frazier reviews djkillwill

I listened to both your tracks here, New Year and So This is Life. To be honest this style does absolutely nothing for me. Sounds like something from a movie background - so that might be an avenue for you to explore. As far a simply listening to this while I'm hangin it's pretty plain. Same beats and changes and only a couple of sythesized instument patches. No real innovation on either tune. Just playing off a street beat. The sounds are good enough, just not enough of them to move any kind of melody. The tunes need to take me some where and I feel like I'm just going to the same place over and over. The vocals were not discenable in So This Is Life due to being buring in the keyboadrs, so I can't really comment on them. Not much more to say on this side. Sorry, Michael

Michael... you gotta slow down! Shocked Very Happy you write reviews faster than I can read 'em. Very Happy

Really - everyone asking for a review - please take time to send Michael comments on his stuff. He puts in a ton of time on the reviews here.
