Hi Lodato,

the piezo sound of guitar strings bothers me a bit in places, but that sound is kindof cool in places too - if you know what I mean. I find myself wanting to hear a slow drum groove going on behind everything as I listen, but the song is very listenable as is also.

Thanks for the feedback smili. I was going to put some percussion in there but decided that I wanted a cleaner folkier sound. As far as the guitar goes, I guess you just don't like the sound of the ovation stereo classical guitar di'd strait into the console. Not everbody does. That's cool. -rl

Nice feel,I really enjoy your vocal tone..Very crisp. Not sure about the guitar sound although the pan and the sort of ringing looseness on the strings seem to ad. There is a lot of fret buzz though on the left guitar making it a bit distracting to me. Definitely a mood setting piece.

Geez, I'm not hearing these things. I'm starting to think Im missing something with the guitar sound. This configuration has always worked for me in the past and I have done this set up for years. It sounds beautiful to me. Maybe it's the compressor bringing the guitar too forward. I don't normally squash the guitar quite as much as I did for this track. That would reveal any miss fires. I'm not the most prolific player. -rl

Hey Rich

I wouldn't panic too much over the useful comments you have received. Reviews are useful for gaining the feedback you are looking for & then for you to decide if you wish to edit your track.

Personally, I love the sound of 'any' Ovation - plugged or unplugged - but they are an aquired taste for some people.

Also, as you know, I love to hear the squeaks & rattles of a guitar being played - just makes it feel more 'live' for me. As i say - all are all 'Personal tastes' for me.

There is definately some fret buzz in both channels - mostly when you are singing the upper ranges and strumming a bit more forceably.

It all comes down to wether or not the 'crits' just back up the more 'live' folky feel you are after - or push you towards a nice clean 'studio' sound.

I know nothing about Mixing or Mastering - I follow the guidelines for mixing then tweek to personal taste.

However, in my own humble opinion, you might like to try changing the pan'ing of the guitars - instead of having them 'Hard' left & right - then throw the volume of them back in the mix a bit.

I have a feeling that the high/strong vocal range of your voice is kinda competeing with the guitars in the mix. I can understand that the emotion in the song kinda calls for this - but with a bit of tweeking - you could balance it out a bit & still achieve the 'feel' you were after.

I have been listening to the track a few more times. Its a very strong track - I out it up there with Fantasy, Vista & Intersection Rich. A super track.
To be honest, If I hadn't read the above posts - I would never have thought about frett buzz or panning - I would have just enjoyed the track like I did fist time I heard it over at MP3 - & I am still enjoying it.

Hey Paul,
I guess it all comes down to personal taste. I find I like the track as it is and maybe I didn't need all this after all. You as always put things into perspective for me and I thank you for that. -rl

lodato -

agree with above... Even though songs are personal don't take reviews personally. it's hard to separate the two sometimes, but what I've found with reviews of my stuff is there's usually useful info in reviews that brings my attention to things that I've missed, but that doesn't mean I necessarily want to change it. It's just a different perspective on the song - a different set of ears - and a different listener's listening experience - on different speakers or headphones.

A couple of other things spring to mind about this also;

On UBW 'Song Comments' seem to be regarded as 'Reviews'.
Personally speaking, a comment on a track is just that - a Comment !! Where someone has maybe listened to a track once ( or more) & leaves a 'Comment'

To me, a 'Review' is where someone will have spent some considrable time listening to a track & will them offer a 'critique on it based on anything from Technical aspects to Artistic content. It is informative, knowledgeable & interesting/entertaining.

The other thing to bear in mind is the 'Credentials/Experience' of the person offering either a 'Song Comment' or a 'Review' - Just to keep it in Perspective!!!

As Smili says, its good to hear a 'different set of ears' - different experiences.

I would not regard myself as being technically qualified to offer any critique on Recording, Mixing or Mastering - Unless they are blatantly obvious flaws. However - I feel - like everyone else in the World - that I can offer a comment on what a track invokes emotionally in me or what pictures it gives to my mind. I much prefer reading & receiving these from people who have been kind enough to listen & offer their words.

All the technical aspects of Recording etc can be fixed or can be 'Learned' .... Whereas Artistic Creation etc simply Can't!!!! ....... You either have it ... or you don't ..... QED!!

Apologies Rich if I have strayed off the topic .... but debate & discussion is good anywhere ( I hope)

LOL - 'Panic' was the wrong word .... can't imagine you ever 'Panicking' lol

Thank you Smili and P. I do take these reviews seriously as I wanted someone elses ears as to how the track sat overall. You can over listen to what you're working on and start missing little things in the audio path from fatigue. Normally I will wait a couple of days after the work is done before having another listen with fresh ears. I find this works as most times I do find flaws I didn't hear. I now know what smili was talking about as far as fret buzz. It's the nature of that guitar when played that way. I have owned that guitar since 1978 and it has become a big part of my musics sound. I have always enjoyed the characteristics of that instrument especially the stereo pickup so I can pan as far or as close as I want to. Ovation didn't make many of these and so they are rare. I like different and that sound is different and maybe I guard the integrity of it a little too much. So I apolgize for comming off defensive or disrepectful. -rl

I really dont hear any fret buzz..just an Oviation doing what it does........I think this is a great track....If "The Beatles" and "Pink Floyd" got together and had a kid and he wrote tunes..this would be one of them..lol
I like it alot!!

Thank you Gunner. I can take criticism and have a thick skin after all these years. I just believe I have a right to not always agree with the feedback I ask for. Still, I ripped this piece apart in my studio track for track after the above comments and nothing bothered me to the point of wanting to change anything.
