I have noticed more and more as of late that folks think the Song Review section is a chat space. It looks unprofessional a lot of times. It's the Home page to our site and should be electronically monitored some how for just song reviews and nothing more. This site has a great look to it but disgusting quotes and chatting communications would turn a lot of would be listeners off for sure. Competitive music site are growing all the time and we need to stay organized in order to be taken seriously. One more thing I would like to add. There should be a way of communicating with the author of such abuses of the home page and it should be known to the author that that's the case. Right now if someone wants to be a prick for the sake of nothing else then to insult an artist, they can and are discovering just that. This has got to stop. I'm sure I'm not the only one to notice the abuse of the Home Page. -rl |

lodato,
I have mixed feelings. i agree with your assesment that there are abusers who aren't looking to provide feedback but just enjoy being pricks. and then there are the serious reviews that are intended to be helpful. there is definately value in the 'honest' reviews.
so one option would be to remove the reviews section from the home page. people could still leave reviews but they wouldn't be 'public'. the goal of having them appear on the home page is that it hopefully encourages others to leave reviews, and in cases where the reviews are positive, it might convert one of our visitors to also listen to the song being reviewed.
the other option would be to put a 1 day lag on showing reviews on the home page. this would allow some time for me to check the reviews before going live, and still offer some fresh feedback on the homepage.
as i type this, i'm thinking option 2 is probably more desireable.
let me know what you think. i really appreciate your suggestions and openness.

Hey Ron,
I like option 2. But isn't there an easier way to program the review section to weed out the abuse? I know I sound a bit foolish. I like having the reviews on the home page. It helps us all in more ways then one. Thanks for understanding and taking a stand. It's much appreciated by myself and I know I'm not alone. -rl |

I'm open to suggestions with regards to programming, but I'm not sure what I would filter out to keep from getting abuse. I've already filtered out html addresses as those are almost always spam. I've got a few other filters that are also designed to get rid of the spam.
If I filter out 'suck' for example. what if someone types, everything sucked until I heard this song, or something like that. It's very tricky to get rid of words that might be used in mulitiple ways. |

what if to help keep out the abusers. in order to leave a review, you had to be a member and your name would have a prompt attached to it so the person leaving the review could be indirectly emailed without showing their email address. It could be a way of deterring the abusers for fear of having to justify the abuse. That could also be a way of thanking someone for a good or informative review. |

forcing comments to come from 'logged in' users is certainly an option. In fact, at one point, it was already setup that way. The problem there is that it keeps the causal listener that doesn't want to signup for an account from being able to leave feedback. Since feedback is so important, I've always erred on the side of 'more' feedback, but obviously that opens us up to problems.
We always require an email address for all posts, and we do validate that they are formed correctly, but that won't necessarily stop someone that just wants to be a prick. Even signing in wouldn't necessarily stop a price, we would then just have pricks among us.
The more I think about it, I think a delay may be our best recourse, and I'll just have to do some periodic approving before they go live. |

It comes down to having to do all this work just to keep the peace at a reasonable amount. There's just no way around it. For now... |
