i never thought of that approach... i will have to try this.....since i dont have any bass guitar in my tracks I have to double the guitar track to get a stereo plus depth and bass freq to offset not having said bass guitar......but seeing where the dropouts are i will be able to eq as you did to get that much closer to a fuller sound.....
Thanks |
The one I used is from spectraplus. Unfortunately it starts at $295 and goes up to around $1300. It has a 30 day trial, so I was playing with it until the trial expires. I'm still looking for a freeware one, or one that is considerably cheaper. If I find one I'll post it here. |

i've only listened to the most recent mix and have no remarks for comparison. this mix sounds really good except for the cymbals/hats. they are just too much and have a really persistent hiss to them that stands out too much and almost sounds like they sit on top of the rest of the mix. i was relieved when the end came and the hiss was gone...unfortunately there was only a few more seconds of the song left. lol
anyhow, they started to get to me towards the end, but i'm also really sensitive to high frequencies....as in they result in nearly uncontrollable anger. it's a dog whistle thing, you know. although they don't bother me, i can hear the tone a dog whistle from about 5 feet away and can tell one's been used within about 15 feet. but enough of my personal problems, what about the track?!?!? right?
if you can, listen to the tracks separately with everything set as is. then, about 1 min into the track, remove the cymbals and hats. i think you'll be able to hear the absence of the hiss saturation within the mix.
the track itself is put together really well. once you get your recording game up to speed, you should get this to every internet radio station you can find, and to every rock station you can afford to send a copy to. i'm sure a lot of internet stations would add it to their rock playlist.
good luck with the hiss! |

Well, I didn't notice it before, but I do now. It's going to drive me insane until I get rid of it.
Problem is the drums are all one track generated from my Boss BR600. I'll try to find the frequency and EQ it out, but I suspect my best bet may be to find drum software and program a new track that way.
Anyone have recommendations on drum software?
Oh, and thanks much for the feedback. It's very nice to have other sets of ears listen to a mix and find things I miss. Much appreciated. |

if you're going through a DAW, you've got a couple options. one would be to reprogram your Boss so that on one setting you've got your hats and whatnot, on another your kick and snare, and so on. but that's pretty tedious. i use Sonar 7 with Reason 4.0 as a rewire plugin. Reason is good for beats and a whole lot more, but it's $400 or more. it's totally worth it if you can use it a lot.
but for just drums, there is a really good program called BFD2 and another called EZDrummer. neither is cheap, but might work out better for your style of music.
as for the hiss, i wonder if you have a combination of too much compression and too much reverb? just kind of throwing some ideas out there to help you in the short-term. i know how annoying it is mixing over and over again.
those higher frequencies are often the hardest to catch when they are messing with your mix. they get muddled by everything else, especially when you've got only the one drum track to work with. good luck! |

Maybe my speakers do not enhance the hiss as much...or i just overlooked it...or perhaps I am going deaf.....lol...i do play my guitar very loud...mmm
anyway...I am with Gorgatron, EZDrummer is a really cool program..i tried it once but my damn PC p.o.s couldnt handle it i guess so i gave up....but...i have heard tracks with the EZDrummer and I could almost not tell the difference between the program or a real drummer...

he hasn't posted in a while, but FaceFitz said he liked BFD2 better than EZDrummer, but i think it had to do with usability. there are some good videos on youtube:
EZDrummer & BFD2
it looks like they pretty much work the same way. |

Ok, I finally bit the bullet and bought Ezdrummer. Makes a huge difference. If anyone's on the fence about programs like this, I highly recommend them. You can compare the old version with the Boss BR600 drums against EZdrummer and draw your own conclusions.

damn dude, nice! yeah, ol' G-spot was right, this is a huge improvement. glad to hear that this program was a good buy for you. the track has a lot more energy now and you were able to get rid of the f@#king hiss! i just went back to that version to compare and was only able to listen for a few seconds before turning it way down due to the hiss.
much better and enjoy the new program! |

It's really good. I like it. Hopefully there will be big things in your future. I agree with some of the posters that you should get this to some internet radio stations and if you can get it to some college stations it could be worth a shot. Nice work. |

Thanks for the feedback guys. As usual, I'm remixing and remixing and remixing. I've tried to boost the kick and upped the mids and bass a little this time around. I also tried a mix that cuts the number of guitars in half. Heresy I know to reduce the number of guitars, but it was worth a shot. If you get a chance, please compare these two and let me know which one you think sounds better.
