Hello,
Im pretty sure that if a cover of a song is posted in public and is to receive any monetary winnings.....they must have a mechanical license for each and every song that they are covering.......
so i would be very careful in pursuing an idea like this...a lot of poor unsuspecting unsigned artists could get sued, and you as well, Do your homework people before jumping into something as appealing as $5,000.
I just checked your website....how are you able to have bands covering songs legally??? |

The cover bands are indeed eligible for the $5,000. Regarding licensing, OurStage has purchased a blanket license to cover the use of material in the Cover Bands channel. They don't need to fear any lawsuits - we made sure to fully vet out all the possibilities with our lawyers before we did this. |

yes it does.....FaceFlip...how the hell are ya?
as far as covers, back in 2002 i didnt know any better and put a song which was a redone version of "Little Wing" by Jimi.....for a contest to win some musical equipment....well, i did not win the gear, but this is what i did win,
an email from an organization...which will be kept anonymous just in case,
It said,
I was in violation of a copywrite law, i was to cease distrubuting of the material, and, if i was not able to present a mechanical license then there would be legal action brought against me..
I wrote back and said,
that none of the instruments on the song were from the original recording and the song was changed slightly to appeal to my own individuality, also, this is an instrumental, I would like to call this piece a remix in sorts, My intention was not to distribute this piece to make millions, but, just some equipment, so in closing, if you are that hard up for money from an artist as big as (you know who) was. then I will pull this piece form any form of public listening......How do you sleep at night??
Sincerely,
so, thought i would share with you guys, just be careful out there, do your homework, I may even go get all this info about copywrites and put it in the proper forum (Gorgatron).lol
See ya |

i take it there was no response to your email from them then??? hahaha its a sad life when they wanna sue the little guy!! i think the rules are so sketchy though, i mean, millions of samll bands do cover after cover of many songs.. live or even distributed on cd or the net...lol.. i mean with the state of music buisness today you'd think they could better use theyre time...lol..

No there wasnt a reply, wimps!!!
well the one way cover bands get away with playing at bars and such is that most of the clubs have a blanket license as Melissa had stated in her post...and the ones who distribute on CD better have the proper license to do so or......its just a matter of time before "Big Brother" catches them....
it is very sad actually.....if i were a signed artist making millions, i think it would be a compliment to hear other bands wanting to do my music, and hey, if they can make some money, so be it, but then again, i dont think its the artist in most cases except Metallica of course, i think its the big wigs.....greed is one of the seven deadly sins and i believe they have mastered this one! |
