Hey guys!
I just started a band and we just played our first gig recently
our problem is that our band comprises of 1 guitar , 1 bass , one singer and one drummer.

both of the guitarists play guitar and dont wana play the bass
the singer is a beginner in bass and it will take him time to learn
could you help us solve the problem of who should play what?

Laughing good luck! how does it work so far? do you guys trade off? that would make the most sense. lets say you write a song for the band on the guitar, then you play it, if the other guy does, then he plays it. if one of the other guys comes with song ideas, then you just go tit for tat.

what's wrong with playing bass? unless the both of you are just freaking world class guitar players, no one person will receive more glory than the other. besides, you have a singer. it seems people often flock to the singers. not sure why that is. maybe they are less intimidating because they often don't play instruments and they do something everyone can do to some extent. easier to identify with.

but yeah, i would just switch up now and then. decide which songs each person is going to play. or, get a 2nd guitar and both guys play guitar and get the singer some bass lessons. that might be the only real solution for you guys in the end if no one is really willing to compromise for the sake of the band. that said, a lot of my favorite bands switch around. all of you should be trying to learn every instrument you can in the first place. it's fun. are all of you pretty young? it kind of sounds like it, no offense intended, of course. sometimes with a band you've just got to quit bitching and do it. giving in to one member's will also sets a bad precedent for the future, if you're trying to maintain some sort of balance within the group.

good luck! Cool

Absolutely nothing wrong with switching out on bass/guitar on different songs. FWIW, a real bass player can add alot to a song. It's not just a guitar with fatter strings. As a bass player I find I'm quite uncreative compared to bass players who understand how to make all the transitions happen and move the song forward.

yea true mate, i think the best long term option would be to find a bass player.. then that leaves you 2 guitars to create with too... but swapping over is a pretty viable option for the time being, good bass players are hard to come by... good luck with your music, i hope to see some recordings up on this site from you in the future!! Cool Cool

or, you both could just take this opportunity to become good bass players, thus cementing the likelihood that you have a secure position in some band for the rest of your musical lives. you can do so much with bass, like smili says. learn to do it yourselves and become as good with bass as you are with guitar. Very Happy
