it's a pretty common subject matter, but everybody knows this. (no pun intended)  i think in approaching it, you may want to take some different points of view than what's normal. play with it a little more. it's not really my thing do the topic, but i do think that with some work, it could be pretty good for the genre.
the good thing is that i can kind of find a melody in the chorus and sing along with it. i don't necessarily like it, but that's really just a personal taste thing. i know a ton of people would like the what i hear with it. that's a good thing. i'd like to hear it with music sometime to see how it matches with what i hear.
good luck and just keep working with it. i don't really write lyrics, but those i know that are pretty good lyricists often spend a lot of time with it. writing drafts, being patient and waiting sometimes for days for that one word, that one rhyme. kind of like workshopping stories with other writers.
