Questions and Answers

We were recently featured in St. Joseph, MO free-press paper, The Mule. Although only the answers to two of the questions made it in the feature, we're still pleased with the answers we gave and think that some of you might also find them amusing (at least the one or two of you that might actually read this... if you don't find it funny, you are going to think that we're just stupid... if you find it funny, you're going to think that we're both funny and stupid). Anyhow, here are the questions we were given and the answers we gave:

Questions:

Describe your sound: The feeling you get after you shine your shoes.... that's a hard one. We haven't found a word or a genre for our sound but an audio technician we worked with about 7 years ago described us as "southern baroque", so whatever the hell that means. We are two acoustic guitars with very little singing and somewhat of a classical sound.

How are you different from other bands?

Other than that already mentioned, we don't use a "verse/chorus" style. The songs are linear without much repetition. Plus, we sit down while we play so there is rarely any crowd surfing and such like.

How did you come up with the name, Sylvan Lane?

We have both been long time admirers of the Edwin Sylvan/Thomas Lane project and have been oft inspired by their mellifluous stylings. Edwin Sylvan, an obscure but prolific cellist and Thomas Lane, big game hunter and philanthropist, collaborated on several studio projects in the early 50's and late 60's. Sylvan provided much of the melodic structure while Lane utilized his vast knowledge of both large and small caliber weapons and munitions to provide rhythm. The subtle blend of the haunting strings of Sylvan's cello along with Lane's superb ear for the ordnance and it's rhythmic report yielded three classic works, perhaps least notably "Retro Desk Infinity". As we were both fortunate enough to serve as understudies to the duo, we felt it a fitting tribute to honor their memories in the naming of the band.

What are your goals as a band?

To remain obscure enough to maintain all creative control on our music while being successful enough to earn above poverty-level wages.

We are personally proud of the answer to the third question.

I'm not sure if anyone actually reads thses entries, but I would like to thank all of you who have beening checking us out over the last few months, especially the last month. It's good to know that there are those of you out there that appreciate our music and enjoy it. We are working on trying to finally provide more material for you to check out, as we have several new tunes ready. Life just often gets in the way and David isn't a big fan of the recording process. We'll get to it, i assure you. So, with that, thanks again for you support. It's all very encouraging. I'd love to hear more comments for our listeners, but we take what we can get. We've been getting more than we had ever thought we'd get.

Cheers!

Hey all! i just wanted to thank everyone for the plays and dpwnloads we've been getting. I don't know who's out there listening, but thanks to all of you. Considering that we've been one here for ledd than 6 months, and the genre we're in, we've had many more streams and downloads that we really thought we'd have. We'd love to hear from you, so please get in contact with us to tell us what you think. We rarely get feedback, so it would be good to hear something from you. We're hoping to get some more tracks for you soon. We've run into a recording snag and haven't been as procutive as we'd like to be. We have a lot of other material ready to go, but are in a bind.

Also, I'd like to mentione again that my Internet radion show sill be starting soon. I've already gotten in contact with unsignedbandweb artists like Colin Lenox, Sofie Bjorck and The Vainglorious to be on the program. If you have any interst in maybe getting some play, please get in touch with me just by emailing me through unsignedbandweb.

Thanks to everyone again.

Brandon of Sylvan Lane gets his own Internet radio program. He want's YOUR music!

Hello Everybody!

This is just a quick announcement about my upcoming radio program on Missouri State University's student-run Internet radion station, The Growl (http://thegrowl.missouristate.edu/contact.html). It is one of the older Internet radio stations in the region, founded in '98-'99. Derek Haff, who engineered most of the demos you've heard on this site, runs the station. One thing, I'm not a student there, so I guess it's student-run, but not completely studuent programed. But I'm off track...

I have already asked a few members of USBW if they were interested in submitting their material, and am now posting a general message to all of you to direct me to your profile, if you are interested!

I'll be covering almost all genres and signed and unsignedbands alike. as signed bands go, I'm seeking those that are on the fringe or have made a major impact on modern music; from unsigned bands I'm looking for bands that are future pioneers and have something unique to contribute. If you think that you fill that description, then submit your material. You can do this two ways:

1. Just contact me from this profile and your message will come to the band address (brandon@sylvanlane.com). I will get back to you as soon as I can.

2. The show already has an email address and will soon have a mayspace presence for listeners to check out. The show's email address is:
thefamousbitingguy@gmail.com

Another perk about the show is that it will also be available for download, so fans of your band will have the chance to either catch the broadcast, and/or grab it off the net and have it forever. Plus, lets face it, the more publicity, the better!

Before I go, I would encourage all of you to submit you material to The Growl. you can visit them at their website, http://thegrowl.missouristate.edu/contact.html, and use the contact page to contact them regarding unsigned artist submission. You can also just try submitting your material by posting it to:

The Growl
c/o Derek Haff - (or Terra Haff or Ben Craig, it will find it's way)
901 S National
Springfield, MO 65804

This will give your material a chance to be included in the regular rotation.

Hope that some of you will take me up on this offer. And let me stress again that I'm looking for ALL KINDS of music. I won't promise that everything submitted will make it on the program, but there is a good chance of it. Hope someone reads this. Take care and I'm looking forward to working with you.

Hello again!

In case anyone is interested, you can listen to the interview Sylvan Lane on Missouri State University's student-run internet radio station, The Growl (http://thegrowl.missouristate.edu/), on the weekly program, Epiphone. You can listen to it by going to"

http://ia310303.eu.archive.org/2/items/Interview_with_Sylvan_Lane/INT_SylvanLane_4_13_06.mp3

We hope to have a direct link to the interview on our website (www.sylvanlane.com) soon as well. You can also always link to The Growl from the Sylvan Lane website to listen anytime. Unsigned artists: submit your material to The Growl by going to their website - URL listed above - to find out how. No press kits or other commercial nonsense needed! Just send them your music and a bit of info about yourself. It's just another easy, free way to get your material heard.

Hope you enjoy the interview.

sorry about this gorgatron biz

hi everyone who's not reading, and maybe a few of you that are. anyhow, first of all we would like to start off by apologizing about this whole gorgatron bit. we were using it for another purpose on this site and now everytime we post something, it uses the name. we know it's rather daft, considering the kind of music we make.

we just upgraded our account due to the amount of streams and downloads we've had in the short time we've been here. i think it's been about 2 months now. so, thanks to all of you who have been listening! with this upgrade we're hoping to get on some of the radio stations and once in a while be one of the highlighted artists. we hope that is done randomly. :-) really, in short, we did it for the extra exposure and have been surprised by the amount of activity on this site. no one we know has a clue we're on here, or at least not at the moment. so this means that all the activity has been from members of the site and those who come here to listen to the good music that is available here at unsignedbandweb.net.

we were recently interviewed on the Missouri State University student-run internet radio station called the Growl (http://thegrowl.missouristate.edu/) on the weekly show, Epiphone. it will later be posted on www.ourmedia.org. once it is, we'll post the URL to the interview for those of you who are interested. the Growl also plays mostly independent and unsigned music. i would encourage all of you to send in your music (no press kits or other glossy promotional stuff is needed, just music and a bit of info), as they play much of what they get. they have been playing our material in their rotation since it was recorded last year.

that about wraps it up. thanks again to all of you who have been listening and please tell anyone who you think might also be interested in our material about it. also, feel free to distribute it as much as you want. we'd love to hear from you, either by signing our guestbook, leaving a song comment, or just by sending us a quick email to let us know what you think. we'll be doing a better job keeping this site up-to-date on any and all activities. take care!

Mucho Activity

Well, I must recant a few statements I made in my previous message regarding a lack of activity. I've noticed over the last month or so that htere is actuall more activity here than on myspace or other sites where we have our music posted. The interesting thing here is that I've never told any friends that our music is posted here. It is not mentioned on our website. This means that all the activity - streams, downloads, etc... - have come from other unsignedbandweb.net users! This is most encouraging. I'd still like to hear more from those of you who listen and download our material. It's very encouraging, and we're most grateful that so many have listened and downloaded our music. To many, it won't appear that there has been all that much activity, but consider that this account has only been active for a little more than a month. I'm really shocked that there has been this much activity. So, If you are reading this and you are listening, please send us a quick note, or maybe even sign our guestbook. We love to hear comments from listeners, regardless of what there is to say. We're just wanting to know what you think. Again, thanks to all of you who are listening and downloading. We really appreciate it and hope you enjoy listening to the music as much as we like making it. With our style of music, we have been a bit skeptical as to whether people would take to it or not. the fact that there has been this amount of activity in this short of time, is very encouraging and helps keep us motivated to make more. We're hoping to add a few more self-recorded tunes soon. Take care everyone, and keep on listening.

Hello everyone! Pleased to meet you.

I hope you have taken some time to listen to our material posted here. We opened this account recently in an act of self-promotion - which is the reason why most of us are here, and also to get to know more artists trying to get their material out there. I've found some really inspired music throughout my search. I've also noticed that there doesn't seem to be a lot of correspondence going on, or it's cliqueish, or maybe I just haven't been here long enough to know. I've been taking the time to listen to as many musicians as possble and contacting some along the way. It looks better for all of us if we listen to each others material, and you run across more groups you like. Many of you probably also have a myspace account. If you don't you should. It's interface is easier and ther is a possibility to meet even more people. We've had more luck here unsignedbandweb.com as far as the number of listeners goes. We haven't played any shows outside of our small city yet, but already some people are listening. We haven't even told anyone we're here, and we've still had more success. I should also qualify "success." I don't mean that it's all blowing up over here, but since no one knows it's here, it's only been here less than a week and we roughly 30 plays, I'd say that's decent for the type of music we make. I will continue to scout out new music and contact others here in our own little corner. Thanks to those of you who have checked us out. Please contact us anytime and let us know what you think about our material and where to find yours. We hope to here from you!
