Do It With The Light On - Indie

OVERVIEW: I've never written a sex song before. It is what it is. (Mrs. O'Neil would like it known that this song is NOT about her!) I had the guitar riff written and the words "why don't we do it with the light on" popped into my brain and just seemed to fit perfectly.

Got Me In A Good Way - Easy Listening

OVERVIEW: I wrote the music for this tune in '07 but really struggled with the lyrics. This was the fourth set of words I came up with for this tune. But hey, persistance pays off, at least I hope it does. Another silly love song for my Leigh. I wrote the music on my Tacoma DR20 acoustic guitar tuned to an open D major.

So Over SoCal - Indie

OVERVIEW: I received an email from a friend asking "are you over socal?" I responded "I'm so over socal." I had already recorded the basic tracks (drums, guitar, bass) for the song, and all of a sudden, the melody for so over socal popped into my head. Over a couple of hours, I hashed out the lyrics and the song was written. I wrote the music on my Tacoma DR-20 acoustic guitar tuned to an open G chord. The working title for the song before the lyrics were written was titled "G-Chordin' Liddy." Get it? If not, look up the Watergate scandal on Wikipedia.

Captivated - Easy Listening

OVERVIEW: The chorus to this song was originally in a little ditty I wrote 9 years ago about my vasectomy. Uh.... yeah, that song went into the recycle bin of my brain. Years later I retrieved the chorus and wrote new lyrics for it. Now it's a love song to my Leigh. Enjoy.

Stuck In The Friend Zone - Indie

OVERVIEW: Musically, this was the first song I put together for what was to become "Racing Thoughts." I recorded the basic tracks in February 2008, but didn't write the lyrics until June 2008. I kept drawing a blank, until one night a friend of mine and Leigh's was complaining that he always ends up "in the friend zone" with the ladies. Well, I've certainly had my share of "friend zone" experiences, and it's, well, read on.

What's A Mind To Do - Indie

OVERVIEW: I have frequent episodes of insomnia. Just lyin' there, watching the minutes, half hours, hours go by knowing I have to be up at 5am to go to work. Frustration sets in, followed by increasing anxiety. I believe I've accurately depicted one of my trecherous boughts with this affliction (how's that for mellodramatic!). I was going for a creepy, Edgar Allen Poe kinda vibe here.

Spare Rooms - Easy Listening

OVERVIEW: I originally wrote this song a month after my daughter Sarah was born. It was kind of a "Butterfly Kisses" type song about a father's love for his newborn child. I made a recording of it, but ultimately found it too corny to show anyone. Fast forward to 2008, I decided I still liked the chorus to the song, so I wrote new verses about being a part-time dad wishing to be a full-time dad.

The Brainstorm - Instrumental

OVERVIEW: August 2008 was a very creative month for me! I was sitting down at the piano getting ready to start tracking "Captivated" when I hit a couple of chords on the Kurzweil keyboard and thought "Oooh, now there's a mood!" One thing led to another, and within 72 hours this tune was finished! It's one of those "everything but the kitchen sink" numbers. I had much fun writing and recording it! So much fun I forgot to write lyrics.

SoCal Revisited - Acoustic

OVERVIEW: I wrote, recorded and mixed this song on September 5th, 2008, with full intent for it to be the CD closer. I felt that since I'd really "dissed" SoCal in the CD opener "So Over SoCal", I ought to take a more sympathetic view of the place I lived in for 28 years. I wrote the music with my Tacoma Dr-20 acoustic guitar tuned to an open G chord.
