Red Star 11 Bio:
Red Star 11 is a 4 piece assembled in London in around 2002, with members from Australia (Nick Penfold- Guitar/ Vocals), Belgium (David Vandermeersh –Guitar/ Piano/ Vocals) and UK (Rob Lane- Bass and Jon Brooker- Drums).
In 2003 Red Star 11 released a full length demo album ('Charlie Chaplin') which raised a lot of interest from industry. In 2008 they release 'The Diamond EP', a totally independent, self-funded effort.
There is a strong singer/songwriter feel (Ryan Adams is a big inspiration), with a wide variety of songs the group have written. The EP illustrates this in full colour- from an American Alternative feel (Pearl Jam- alike) through to being atmospheric and reminiscent more of Radiohead, Travis or even Jeff Buckley. Having 2 lead vocalists/ songwriters (David and Nick) is also a quite unique situation for a modern band. David spent a number of years living in California, growing up with Springsteen & Counting Crows, while Nick discovered Smashing Pumpkins, Soundgarden and Faith No More living on a farm in rural South Australia. We met in an Istanbul live music bar while travelling in 97, bonding over some borrowed guitars playing Pearl Jam and Alice in Chains covers. |
