<itunes:summary><font face="tahoma,arial,helvetica,sans-serif" size="3">&quot;Metric&quot; is about waiting for promises that aren&#39;t going to be kept. The narrator, who began grade school in the waning months of the 1960s, was promised many things-- including the metric system. The public school system was relentless in pushing the practicality of this universal base-10 measuring system. No more twelve-inches-to-a-foot, three-feet-to-a-yard. No more unwieldy furlongs and pecks. Say good-bye to the Euro-centric English System all together. Metrics would link volume, weight and distance on a global basis. One cubic centimeter of water would weigh one milligram anywhere. The planet could unite around this common system of measurement. But it never materialized. Instead, the song&#39;s narrator was subjected to a great deal of events and concepts that were not on the list of Coming Attractions. Here he dutifully notes them, but is still awaiting the metric system-- or at least an explanation for its absence. Incidentally, I used every instrument in the house when recording this song. This version is my post-industrial mix.</font></itunes:summary>

Intriquing subject to write a song about and some very creative ideas falling out of this song at every corner, excellent imagery, original, and the bass line is really dark and perfect for the material. <itunes:summary><span style="font-size: 16px;">I cut this as a goof. A band I sometimes jam with was auditioning a new singer, and she wanted us to learn this song. I got the guitar tab off the internet and downloaded Elvis Presley's version to Cool Edit Pro. I added my bass guitar and "sang along" with Elvis. After erasing his version all together, I added the rest of the instruments. <br />
<br />
I forgot all about it until I learned the song is in public domain. Then I was like "Various OMDs, here I come!"</span><br />

<itunes:summary><span style="font-size: 16px;">"Great expression... Yes indeed, impressed with your songwriting ideas and ability to write such vivid lyrics, there's such a feeling of desolation in this song and maybe resolve that whatever we live through makes us stronger, even the long trail to make a better life that can take a lifetime. Great line, looking for diamonds in coal... The music on the outro builds to a great conclusion, an ethereal finish, I hope you develop this song as it's really got something worth working on. <itunes:subtitle>Metric - Alternative</itunes:subtitle>
<itunes:summary><span style="font-size: 16px;">"I couldn't resist picking this one. Metric is like an Indie Millenium Anthem. I hear plain out rock and roll at first... Guitar, bass, drums. Then a lead comes in which is just this side of normal, but I like it and it prepares you for... The voice. Odd and abnormal and quite nicely different. Certainly not what I was expecting to hear. Admittedly at first I was like "Uhh..." but trust me, it works, especially when he starts playing with some vocal effects. I LOVE the Web Wilder style overdriven voice around 1:45. It's a clever, clever device to which some of us can grin while the rest don't get it, but that's okay. Lyrically, somewhat like Billy Joel's We Didn't Start the Fire except this song doesn't suck ****. It's a remember/contemplate/what the hell? type effect. I think the subject matter is particularly well chosen and executed. Now to more musical stuff. Paul is wickedly bizarre with his guitar riffs which just somehow work. The drums have an effective pounding driving beat that scoots this song along well. The arrangement and writing is razor sharp in every aspect. Every bridge, chorus, side bridge, worm hole, etc is exactly where it should be. The chorus kills me... I got a violent School House Rock flashback and almost plowed a hippy bus. (Yes, occasionally I take the songs I'm reviewing on the road with me so I can listen as I drive.) Criticism: The bass and drums are a bit muddy. I'd love to hear them done in a studio. Otherwise, all I can say is that some aspects are just limited by your instruments (ie. Radio Shack keyboards) which I imagine would sound brilliant with some better equipment... though, in a They Might Be Giants kind of way, the more toy-like sounding keyboards do sort of work. Very cool song that takes you right off the beaten path... and if you like that sort of thing, this song is for you." Heath Houston, SoundClick critic, March 31, 04.</span></itunes:summary>
